The Red Storm is set to play its final regular season conference series in Queens
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's softball team (25-23, 12-9) returns to Queens this weekend for its final BIG EAST regular season series against Seton Hall (23-19, 10-8) on Friday-Sunday.
The series is set to start on Friday at 2 p.m. at Red Storm Field. On Saturday, the Red Storm will honor its three graduating seniors – Amy Mallah, Hannah Mearns and Madison Wallace – with a Senior Day ceremony after the 1 p.m. tilt concludes. The two programs will meet for the finale on Sunday at noon.
Flosports will carry the coverage for the opening two games of the series. ESPN+ will broadcast game three. Live stats for the entire series will be provided at RedStormSports.com. Attendance is free for all fans at Red Storm Field throughout the weekend.
The Johnnies enter the weekend on a four-game winning streak and in fourth place in the BIG EAST. Behind strong pitching performances by Loreley Francia and Ana Serafinko, the Red Storm swept a doubleheader at FDU on Tuesday, taking game one 1-0 before winning the latter contest 3-2. Last weekend, St. John's won the closing two games at Georgetown to take the series from the Hoyas, marking its fourth conference series win of 2024.
In game one against the Knights on Tuesday, Francia earned her team-leading 11th victory with her third shutout of the season. The sophomore tossed three perfect innings to start the contest on her way to allowing just three hits while punching out 10 batters for her fourth double-digit strikeout performance this year. Francia leads the team in innings pitched (114.2), strikeouts (131), and is second in ERA (2.83).
Following Francia's efforts, Serafinko put together a strong outing inside the circle to help St. John's takedown FDU in game two. The left-hander recorded 13 strikeouts while allowing just two runs (one earned) on six hits in the full seven innings. Serafinko finished just one shy of her career-high 14 strikeouts that was set earlier this season against Manhattan. The Chino Hills, Calif., product actively has a 2.58 ERA and 129 strikeouts in 105.2 innings of work.
Shortstop London Jarrard enters the weekend looking to break a couple of program records for the Red Storm. With 47 runs batted in, the junior sits just three RBIs away from setting the new single-season program record, which would break recent St. John's Hall of Fame Inductee Erin Burner's mark of 49 set back in 2015. Jarrard is also two doubles shy of breaking Chelsea Durning's career record of 45 two-baggers during her playing career from 2008-2011. The former All-BIG EAST First-Team selection has already reached the 100 hit and RBI milestones of her career in the 2024 campaign.
Seton Hall enters the series in fifth with a 10-8 conference mark just behind St. John's. Earlier this week, the Pirates competed in a pair of doubleheaders after dropping two of three games to UConn last weekend. On Tuesday, Seton Hall took both games against Drexel before splitting the pair at Army on Wednesday.
In the opening game against Drexel, pitcher Kelsey Carr tossed the 22nd no-hitter in program history, allowing just one walk while striking out four in seven hitless innings. Carr has a 3.55 ERA and 106 punchouts in 122.1 innings of work in 2024.
The Red Storm leads the all-time series that dates back to 1981 with a record of 62-32 against the Pirates. However, Seton Hall has had recent success in the rivalry, winning each of the last five games against St. John's.
Following this weekend, the Johnnies will travel up to West Point for a doubleheader against Army on Wednesday to end its regular season. Game one is scheduled for a 3 p.m. first pitch.
