The Red Storm moves to 2-0 in conference play, best league start since 2017
PLYMOUTH MEETING, Pa. – The St. John's baseball team (21-5-1, 2-0) tossed its fourth shutout of the season, taking down Villanova (7-20, 0-5) with an 11-0 victory on Saturday afternoon.
With the blanking, the Red Storm has the most shutouts in a season since 2019 when the team also threw four. The Johnnies also moved to 2-0 in conference play for the first time since the 2017 campaign. The 11-run triumph was the largest margin of victory for St. John's in a conference game shutout since downing Cincinnati, 15-0, on May 13, 2007.
All 10 offensive players to make a plate appearance recorded at least one hit on the afternoon, nine of which scored a run.
Ben Beauchamp and Jimmy Keenan paced the way with three hits apiece, combining for three runs and three RBIs. Jackson Tucker and Luke Orbon, alongside Beauchamp, chipped in two RBIs each.
Designated hitter Paul Orbon cashed in with three RBIs on the day, while Garrett Scavelli went 2-for-5 with a pair of runs scored.
The Johnnies threatened with the bases loaded to open the game following three straight singles from Mayberry, Keenan and Luke Orbon. The fourth consecutive knock came from Paul Orbon, who delivered a single up the middle and knocked in both Keenan and Mayberry for a 2-0 lead.
Starter Evan Chaffee worked a quick 1-2-3 first inning, tossing just nine pitches to maintain the two-run edge. The Hamburg, N.Y., native continued his scoreless stretch through the third inning and stifled the Wildcats' lineup with just one walk allowed over that span.
The Red Storm poured it on with three runs in the top of the fourth, seeing its first five batters reach base safely. After loading the bases with a single from Aries Samek, a double from Garrett Scavelli and a free base on balls to Anthony Brienza, Tucker drew another walk to knock in one run for a 3-0 lead. Beauchamp followed up with a two-run double down the left-field line to secure a 5-0 advantage. After a sacrifice fly from Blake Mayberry brought in the team's sixth run, Keenan looped an RBI single behind first base to give the Johnnies a 7-0 lead.
St. John's Tucker continued to swing a hot bat in the fifth with an RBI double, knocking in Beauchamp for an 8-0 advantage.
Chaffee pounded the zone, carrying a no-hitter through 4.1 frames before surrendering his first knock in the fifth. The southpaw found himself in trouble with the bases loaded in the same frame but Beauchamp laid out for a catch in right, saving two runs from scoring and preserving the shutout.
Villanova threatened again in the sixth, only to see the tandem of Chaffee and TJ Winn Jr. work out of the jam. The Red Storm starter finished his 5.2 innings of work allowing just five hits and striking out two Wildcats.
St. John's registered three more tallies in the eighth, all thanks to Luke Orbon. After a single by Beauchamp and a double from pinch hitter Jayder Raifstanger, the Johnnies' shortstop cleared the bases with a two-run single, bumping the lead to double digits, 10-0. In the ensuing at-bat, Paul Orbon smacked a deep fly ball to the right-field warning track, scoring his younger brother from second on the sacrifice fly and giving the Red Storm an 11-0 advantage.
Reliever Kyle Chase, who came on in the seventh, continued to keep the Wildcats off balance with three scoreless innings of work en route to his first collegiate save. The Levittown, N.Y., native struck out a season-high five batters in his longest outing of the year, allowing just one hit and two walks.
The Johnnies will look for a series sweep when they return to action against Villanova on Sunday. First pitch from Villanova Ballpark at Plymouth is scheduled for 12 p.m.
