St. John’s to Welcome Fairfield on Tuesday

Red Storm and Stags to square off at 1 p.m. on ESPN+
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's baseball team (33-13-1) will wrap up its midweek slate with a rescheduled contest against Fairfield (29-21) on Tuesday afternoon at Jack Kaiser Stadium.

The Johnnies clinched a spot in the BIG EAST Tournament with two wins at Seton Hall over the weekend. Evan Chaffee and Mario Pesca were stellar on the rubber against the Pirates, striking out three batters apiece and combining to allow just two earned runs over 14.0 innings of work. Over their last three starts, the duo produced nearly identical numbers en route to six of the team's eight wins over that stretch. Both starters boast a 1.50 ERA to go with a batting average against under .200 over 18.0 innings of work apiece.
St. John's pitchers have emerged as one of the top staffs in the country with a 4.34 ERA, good for 21st in the nation. Additionally, the team has tossed four shutouts this season, tied for 17th in the country. Since April 23, the Johnnies have held the opposition to four runs or less with a .211 batting average against over its last 11 games. The Red Storm holds a 19-2 record in games in which it allows three runs or fewer.
The Red Storm will face off with Fairfield for the 38th time in program history when the two teams meet on Tuesday, seeing the Johnnies hold a 30-7 lead in the series. St. John's picked up a 5-4 victory in 11 innings on March 28, 2023, with Anthony Brienza crossing home plate for the game-winning run after the Stags' catcher touched the ball with detached equipment. Luke Orbon went 2-for-4 on the afternoon with an RBI while Jace Jeremiah scored twice in the contest.
Fairfield enters Tuesday's contest having won nine of the last 10 games. Dean Ferrara and Ethan Hibbard have put together an impressive 2024 campaign, pacing the team in several categories. Ferrera has produced a squad-leading .394 batting average and 84 hits this season while Hibbard has registered a team-best 16 homers, 51 runs and 60 RBIs.
The Stags pace the MAAC with 80 home runs while posting the second-most runs scored per game with 8.0. On the rubber, Fairfield leads the conference with a 4.98 ERA, a 2.6 strikeout-to-walk ratio and a 1.43 WHIP.
The Johnnies will wrap up the regular season this weekend when Georgetown comes to Jack Kaiser Stadium for the final BIG EAST series. St. John's needs one win over the Hoyas to clinch a top-two seed in the tournament.
