Red Storm closes 2024 regular season with 34-16-1 overall record and 14-7 mark in BIG EAST play
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's baseball team (34-16-1, 14-7) dropped its season finale to Georgetown (34-19, 13-7), 3-0, on Saturday afternoon at Jack Kaiser Stadium.
After a scoreless opening frame, starter Mario Pesca found himself in a bases-loaded, one-out jam. The right-hander steadily worked his way out of trouble with a shallow flyout from Michael Eze and forced Owen Carapellotti to ground out to second, getting out of the frame unscathed.
TJ Winn Jr. came on in the third and also battled the Hoyas' lineup. The freshman hurler put runners on first and second with one out. After nearly getting out of the frame with a double play, Winn finished off the inning with left fielder Kavi Caster swinging through strike three. The righty continued to pester the Hoyas in the fourth, stranding a runner on base after reeling a throw from Anthony Brienza for a 4-1 putout at first. Winn finished his two innings of scoreless work with one strikeout and two hits allowed.
Georgetown continued to threaten in the fifth, loading the bases for the second time in the game. Chuck Sanzio weathered the storm with a pop-up behind second base to stave off the Hoyas' opportunity.
Reliever Tim Cunningham made his 99th career appearance for the Red Storm on Saturday, one outing away from becoming the third Johnnie in program history to reach the century mark. The submariner struck out a pair of batters in his lone inning of work.
Left-hander Chad Falcon faced the minimum in his one frame of action, inducing a 6-4-3 double play to end the seventh stanza.
The Hoyas broke through in the eighth, capitalizing on a Red Storm error and scoring three runs in the frame. The Johnnies could not break through in the final two frames despite logging two base knocks in the eighth inning.
The Johnnies' quest for their conference-leading 10th BIG EAST Championship will start on Wednesday with an opening-round matchup against third-seeded Georgetown. First pitch of the 2024 BIG EAST Tournament, presented by JEEP, from Prasco Park in Mason, Ohio is slated for 2:30 p.m.
