Second-Seeded St. John’s Readies for 2024 BIG EAST Baseball Championship

NEW YORK – The second-seed St. John's baseball team (34-16-1, 14-7) will begin its quest for its conference-leading 10th postseason title when it faces third-seeded Georgetown in the opening round of the 2024 BIG EAST Baseball Championship. First pitch from Prasco Park in Mason, Ohio is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
The first three days of the double-elimination tournament will be broadcast on the BIG EAST Digital Network before Championship Sunday airs on FS1 with John Fanta, Paul Fritschner, Mike Schmaltz and Kacy Standohar providing coverage all week. Live stats will also be available on RedStormSports.com.
The Red Storm, who was picked to finish sixth in the BIG EAST Preseason Coaches Poll, earned the second seed in its return to the BIG EAST Tournament and saw Head Coach Mike Hampton earn BIG EAST Coaching Staff of the Year along side assistant coaches George Brown, John Valente and Nate Vigeant.
Halting a five-year hiatus, St. John's will make its first postseason appearance under the direction of Hampton since taking over the program in 2020. It will mark his 17th appearance in the league tournament since his arrival in Queens in 2001, assisting the Red Storm in 16 consecutive postseason berths (2004-19) under former head coach Ed Blankmeyer. The Johnnies are 54-42 in the BIG EAST Tournament and 4-3 at Prasco Park since the conference moved its postseason slate to Mason, Ohio.
Four Johnnies earned All-BIG EAST honors on Tuesday morning, seeing Jimmy Keenan, Mario Pesca and Garrett Scavelli capturing first team nods and Louis Marinaro garnering a second team selection. All four student-athletes secured their first postseason honor with the Red Storm. With three All-BIG EAST First Team honorees, the Red Storm matched its most on the league's top squad since the 2021 slate.
The Red Storm will turn to right-hander Xavier Kolhosser in game one, carrying his 8-2 record into the postseason. His eight victories are tied for 15th in the nation. The two-time BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week also boasts a 3.45 ERA while helping the Johnnies to three of its four shutouts (22nd in NCAA) this season.
The Johnnies' pitching staff dominated all season, boasting a 4.17 ERA (13th in NCAA) with four shutouts (22nd). St. John's is one of 11 teams at the Division I level that has three pitchers with six or more wins this season - Kolhosser (8), Pesca (6) and Marinaro (6). Of BIG EAST pitchers to toss at least seven innings this season, the Red Storm have four of the conference's top 10 hurlers in ERA. The Red Storm, who finished with a 34-16-1 record, sits 27th in Division I with a .676 winning percentage.

The Red Storm is also 2-0 in the BIG EAST Tournament against the Hoyas, most recently earning a 5-2 victory in 2018. The tandem of Sean Mooney and Joe La Sorsa kept the Hoyas at bay in their last meeting with a combined two runs allowed on seven hits. Jamie Galazin provided the eventual game-winning three-run homer in the third inning while Luke Stampfl nearly completed the cycle, falling a double shy on May 24, 2018.
