Red Storm is 17-2-1 at Jack Kaiser Stadium this season
QUEENS, N.Y. – Fresh off its 17th win at home and matching its 28 victories from a year ago with a win against Iona on Wednesday, the St. John's baseball team (28-11-1, 8-4) will welcome BIG EAST foe Creighton (31-11, 4-7) to Jack Kaiser Stadium for a three-game series beginning on Friday.
Due to the inclement weather forecast this weekend, the Red Storm and Bluejays have moved up Friday's game time from 6 p.m. to 3 p.m. The final two games are on as scheduled with a 3 p.m. first pitch on Saturday and a 12 p.m. start time on Sunday. All three contests will be streamed on ESPN+ and live stats will be available on RedStormSports.com.
The first 350 fans in attendance of Friday's game will receive a free pair of sunglasses, courtesy of RedZone. Former St. John's baseball players are also welcomed back to campus on Saturday to celebrate Alumni Day at The Jack with festivities beginning at 1 p.m.
The Red Storm rides a three-game winning streak into Friday's contest after defeating Iona, 5-4, on Wednesday evening. Luke Orbon registered his 100th career hit with a two-blast in the fifth, finishing the day with three RBIs.
Graduate outfielder Garrett Scavelli continues to find his way on base with a 27-game reached base streak. Over the last month, the Franklin Square, N.Y., native has increased his on-base percentage from .315 to .496 over the last 27 contests. Scavelli is also hitting a team-best .420 over that span with 42 hits, 14 of which have gone for extra bases. The Johnnies' left fielder paces conference play with 15 runs scored and 38 total bases while ranking second with a .444/.545/.844 slash line, 20 hits and four homers.
The Red Storm has earned four wins against teams with an RPI of 50 or better this season, including then No. 2 Florida (18), a pair of victories over Xavier (34) and one win over UConn (44). St. John's enters the series at No. 59 in RPI while Creighton sits at No. 49, as of Thursday.
St. John's will look to halt a seven-game skid to the Bluejays, searching for its first win since May 1, 2021, when the Johnnies took a 4-1 victory. The Red Storm will also be in search of its first home win and series victory over Creighton since 2018 when the Johnnies swept the Bluejays on April 13-15. Friday will mark just the 13th time St. John's and Creighton will square off at Jack Kaiser Stadium since the Bluejays joined the BIG EAST.
Creighton currently leads the league with 31 wins this season, despite a 4-7 conference mark. The Bluejays are also 12-5 away from Charles Schwab Field Omaha, home of the College World Series.
Nolan Sailors paces Creighton and ranks second in the BIG EAST with a .391 batting average (41st in NCAA), 63 hits and 52 RBIs. The junior outfielder has also produced a team-best 48 runs scored (1st in BE) and 14 doubles in 42 appearances this season.
The Bluejays lead the conference with a .298 batting average and 8.1 runs per game. The team's 18 triples match the Red Storm for the league's top spot. A combined seven players between both squads have three or more triples this season, including St. John's Anthony Brienza as well as Creighton's Teddy Deters and Kyle Hess who recorded a conference-leading four apiece.
The Red Storm will wrap up its five-game homestand on Tuesday when FDU comes to The Jack for Senior Day. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m.
