QUEENS, N.Y. – Fresh off its conference-leading 10th BIG EAST Tournament Championship, the St. John's baseball team will begin its Road to Omaha at the Charlottesville Regional.
The third-seeded Johnnies will open the postseason slate on Friday at 7 p.m., against second-seeded Mississippi State. The contest will be streamed on ESPN+.
Entering the regional with a record of 37-16-1 and an RPI of 51, St. John's will take on the Bulldogs (38-21) in the opener. St. John's and Mississippi State will meet for the first time in program history, despite both teams making their 38th appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The two squads are tied for 11th in college baseball history alongside Stanford and Texas A&M.
St. John's makes its first NCAA Regional appearance since earning an automatic bid during the 2018 campaign, led by BIG EAST Player of the Year and current assistant coach John Valente.
The Charlottesville Regional is headed by the 12th overall seed Virginia, who the Red Storm have squared off with on seven previous occasions, going 3-4 in such contests. The Johnnies hold a 2-2 record against the Cavaliers in the NCAA Tournament. St. John's and the University of Pennsylvania will also meet for the first time if the two face off in Charlottesville.
Head Coach Mike Hampton will make his 11th NCAA Tournament appearance since arriving in Queens in 2001, marking the first since taking over the team in 2020. Hampton also secured his first BIG EAST crown as the team's skipper, bumping his career total to five since joining the Red Storm.
The Johnnies became one of 11 schools at the Division I level to capture double-digit league championships in the same conference with their 4-2 win over Georgetown at Prasco Park in Mason, Ohio on Saturday. Sophomore catcher Jimmy Keenan earned the Jack Kaiser Most Outstanding Player Award for his stellar efforts in leading the Red Storm to its 10th conference title, going 7-for-14 at the dish with six RBIs and a pair of go-ahead home runs.
Four members of the Red Storm earned All-BIG EAST distinction at the end of the regular season, led by First Team selections Keenan, Mario Pesca and Garrett Scavelli. Hampton also led the BIG EAST Coaching Staff of the Year for the first time in his career.
