St. John’s Falls to FDU, 3-1

Blake Mayberry drove in the team’s lone run on Tuesday
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's baseball team (31-12-1) saw its six-game winning streak snapped on Tuesday with a 3-1 setback to FDU (19-27) at Jack Kaiser Stadium.
Both teams were held off the board through the opening two frames with St. John's TJ Winn Jr. and FDU's Nicholas Feretic battling through the early going. After both starters departed, the Knights jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the third on a two-run single from Joey DiMotta.
The Johnnies slashed its deficit in half with one run in the home half of the third. Following a leadoff double by Anthony Brienza, who swiped also swiped third, Blake Mayberry laced an RBI single to left-center to bring the Red Storm within one, 2-1.
FDU reclaimed a two-run edge, 3-1, with another tally in the fourth, capitalizing on a Red Storm miscue with a Hunter D'Amato RBI base knock to left.
Reliever Louis Marinaro kept the Knights off the board through the fifth and sixth innings, tossing back-to-back 1-2-3 frames. Right-hander Chuck Sanzio came on in the seventh and retired the side in order after allowing a leadoff walk.
Tim Cunningham made his 95th appearance with St. John's on Tuesday, also recording a scoreless eighth inning with a pair of strikeouts before Jed Boyle entered in the ninth and hurled a perfect frame.
FDU's pitching staff kept the Red Storm off-balance all game, surrendering just two hits over the final six innings of action.
St. John's will head to Seton Hall beginning on Friday in hopes of clinching its spot in the 2024 BIG EAST Tournament. The Red Storm needs just one win in the weekend slate to punch its ticket to Prasco Park in Mason, Ohio for the postseason slate on May 22-25.
