QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's baseball team continued to rack up postseason awards as Jimmy Keenan and Mario Pesca earned All-Region First Team honors while Xavier Kolhosser captured an All-Region Second Team nod by the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) on Tuesday.
The Johnnies' pitching staff, led by Kolhosser and Pesca, dominated all season with a 4.35 ERA (17th in NCAA) and four shutouts (25th). The Red Storm, who finished its 2024 with a 38-18-1 record, sits 28th in Division I with a .675 winning percentage.
Keenan slashed .335/.386/.436 overall, pacing the team with 70 hits, 57 RBIs, 12 homers and 21 doubles. The White Plains, N.Y., helped the Red Storm to its 10th BIG EAST crown after earning the 2024 Jack Kaiser Most Outstanding Player Award at the conference tournament. The 6-foot-3 catcher added to his program-record 27 successful caught stealing attempts, the most by a BIG EAST catcher since the league's realignment in 2013.
Pesca also shined in an elevated role in 2024, making 15 starts with a 6-1 record and a 2.96 ERA. The righty's ERA is ranked second in the conference and 36th in the nation. The Bronx native battled all year as the team's rubber match starter, going 12-3 in Pesca's outings. He also secured one of the team's conference-leading five pitcher of the week honors on May 6 after allowing just two hits and striking out seven batters across a career-high seven innings of work to take down Creighton, 7-1.
Kolhosser put on one of the most dominant seasons by a Red Storm starter in recent memory with a 9-2 record and a 3.43 ERA. The right-hander also struck out 51 batters across 15 appearances, 12 of which were starts. The Wappinger Falls, N.Y., native also helped the team to three of its four shutouts this season, including a pair of BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week honors after blanking Fordham (March 22) and Winthrop (March 29) in back-to-back weeks.
The redshirt sophomore produced one of the longest postseason outings by a Red Storm pitcher since 1981 when Kolhosser tossed a career-high 8.2 innings of work in the opening game of the Charlottesville Regional on May 31. The righty also struck out seven batters along the way.
