Jimmy Keenan and Xavier Kolhosser earn second postseason recognition this week
QUEENS, N.Y. – St. John's Head Coach Mike Hampton captured Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Coach of the Year honors after a stellar 2024 campaign while Jimmy Keenan and Xavier Kolhosser captured All-ECAC Team selections, as announced by the conference on Thursday.
The Red Storm finished its 2024 season with a 38-18-1 record that sits 28th in Division I with a .675 winning percentage. Hampton also guided the Red Storm to a 14-7 mark in conference play, both high marks since taking over the program in 2020. The fifth-year skipper, who also secured BIG EAST Coaching Staff of the Year, guided four Johnnies to all-conference honors this past season.
Hampton led the Red Storm to its conference-leading 10th BIG EAST Tournament championship with a 3-0 record in the league's postseason slate. With the at-large bid received from winning in Mason, Ohio in late May, St. John's made its 38th appearance in the NCAA Tournament and earned a 10-9 victory in 12 innings over Penn in the Charlottesville Regional.
St. John's opened the 2024 campaign with its highest-ranked regular season victory in program history, knocking off 2023 National Runner-up No. 2 Florida, 9-5. Shortly after, the Johnnies rattled off its longest winning streak since 2015 with 13 consecutive wins from March 3 to March 22. The Red Storm also logged 21 victories at Jack Kaiser Stadium, the most in a season since 2018.
The Johnnies' pitching staff, led by Kolhosser, dominated all season with a 4.35 ERA (17th in NCAA) and four shutouts (25th). The right-hander put forth one of the most effective seasons by a Red Storm starter in recent memory with a 9-2 mark, a 3.43 ERA and 51 strikeouts across 15 appearances, 12 of which were starts. His nine victories are also tied for sixth-most by a Johnnies in a single season.
The Wappinger Falls, N.Y., native helped the team to three of its four shutouts this season, including a pair of BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week honors after blanking Fordham (March 22) and Winthrop (March 29) in back-to-back weeks. The redshirt sophomore produced one of the longest postseason outings by a Red Storm pitcher since 1981 when Kolhosser tossed a career-high 8.2 innings of work in the opening game of the Charlottesville Regional on May 31. The righty also struck out seven batters along the way.
Keenan slashed .335/.386/.436 overall, pacing the team with 70 hits, 57 RBIs, 12 homers and 21 doubles. The White Plains, N.Y., helped the Red Storm to its 10th BIG EAST crown after earning the 2024 Jack Kaiser Most Outstanding Player Award at the conference tournament. The 6-foot-3 catcher added to his program-record 27 successful caught stealing attempts, the most by a BIG EAST catcher since the league's realignment in 2013.
