QUEENS, N.Y. – After helping the Red Storm baseball team to its 10th BIG EAST Tournament championship and 38th appearance in the NCAA Tournament, St. John's ace Xavier Kolhosser has been selected by the Minnesota Twins in the 13th round of the 2024 MLB Draft on Tuesday.
Going with the 398th overall pick, Kolhosser becomes the 13th Red Storm hurler to be selected in the MLB Draft since 2015. He is also the seventh Johnnie to be picked in the first 13 rounds during that stretch.
In just two seasons with the Red Storm, the Wappinger Falls, N.Y., native dazzled with a 12-2 record while making starts in 21 of his 24 career outings. Boasting a 3.18 ERA, he also struck out 81 batters across 107.2 innings of work.
The righty put forth one of the most effective seasons by a Red Storm starter in recent memory with a 9-2 record in 2024. His nine victories were tied for sixth-most by a Johnnies in a single campaign and ranked 22nd in the nation last season. The redshirt sophomore also posted a 3.43 ERA and 51 strikeouts across 15 appearances in 2024, 12 of which were starts.
Kolhosser helped St. John's to three of its four shutouts last year while picking up a pair of BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week honors after blanking Fordham (March 22) and Winthrop (March 29) in back-to-back weeks. He also produced one of the longest postseason outings by a Red Storm pitcher since 1981 when Kolhosser tossed a career-high 8.2 innings of work in the opening game of the Charlottesville Regional on May 31. The Johnnies' ace also struck out seven batters along the way.
Kolhosser becomes the first Johnnie to be selected in the MLB Draft since Nick Mondak was picked in the 18th round by the Los Angeles Angels in 2021. He is also the first Red Storm pitcher to be selected by Minnesota since 2019, joining Sean Mooney, who is currently with the Twins' Double-A affiliate, Wichita Wind Surge.
