St. John’s to Open 2024 Season on Friday with Iona's Meet of Champions

Red Storm will race in Iona’s home meet for the first time in two years
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's cross country team will open its 2024 campaign on Friday with the Iona Meet of Champions at Van Cortlandt Park in Bronx, N.Y. The 5K race is set to start at 10:45 a.m.
The Red Storm will race in Iona's home meet for the first time since the 2022 season. The Johnnies finished in fifth place behind Ezgi Yasar's 19:19.00 finish in her 5K collegiate debut.
St. John's returns four athletes from the 2023 season in Gabriella Caronia, Yasar, Cristina Stanescu and Ana Dobsa.
Caronia enjoyed a tremendous junior season in 2023, setting a new 5K personal record of 18:35.50 at the Metropolitan Cross Country Championship and a 6K career-best of 22:56.00 at the NCAA Northeast Regional.
Yasar excelled last season as a sophomore, making six appearances and setting a 6K personal-best mark of 22:19.80 at the 2023 NCAA Northeast Regional meet.
The Red Storm also brought in five newcomers for the 2024 season, featuring three freshmen in Leyre Campo de Quevedo, Naiara Garcia and Mia Torres. The squad added a pair of transfer sophomores in Eileen Grenandos (Cortland) and Brenin Mahon (Suffolk CC).
Head Coach Elliott Blount enters his fourth season at the helm of the Red Storm. Last year, Blount led St. John's to its first-ever Metropolitan Championship title to go along with two top-three finishes.
