Red Storm will square off with The Herd for the first time in program history on Saturday
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's men's soccer team will hit the road to take on No. 6 Marshall at Hoops Family Field on Saturday, beginning at 7 p.m. The inaugural meeting between the Red Storm and The Herd will be streamed on ESPN+ and live stats will be available on RedStormSports.com.
The Johnnies (2-2-2) will look to rebound from its recent 2-1 setback to Princeton on Tuesday. St. John's Freshman attacker Dechlyn Hauge netted the squad's lone goal on a redirected header from Antonio Biggs. The Red Storm's backline provided nearly half of the shots in the midweek contest, seeing Biggs, Bjorn Nikolajewski and Camron Boumsong account for six of the team's 13 attempts.
Red Storm Head Coach Dr. David Masur is just one win away from becoming the seventh men's soccer coach in NCAA history to reach the 400-win plateau with a singular Division I program. The 34-year head coach of St. John's, who sits with 399 victories in Queens, will also be the second active Division I head coach to reach the milestone, joining Maryland's Sasho Cirovski (430). St. John's is also closing in on 500 triumphs as a program, sitting with 498 victories entering Tuesday's slate.
Senior midfielder Eric Danquah is expected to make his 73rd appearance at the NCAA Division I level on Saturday. The Accra, Ghana native currently ranks in the top 20 among active players in games played, sitting in a tie for 20th. He is also one of three BIG EAST players to be listed among the top 20 active leaders in Division I.
Fellow midfielder Miguel Diaz has scored a team-leading three goals this season. The Brooklyn product is tied for third in the BIG EAST with his trio of tallies, trailing only Butler's Josemir Gomez and UConn's Sabri Hanni.
Saturday's matchup will mark the first meeting between the Johnnies and Thundering Herd. The two programs have combined for 880 wins since their inaugural season in 1979.
Marshall (4-1-0) enters Saturday's contest conceding just one goal over its recent three-game winning streak. After powering past Loyola (Md.), 6-1, the Thundering Herd posted back-to-back 2-0 shutouts against High Point and Gardner-Webb.
The favorite to win the Sunbelt Conference according to the league's preseason coaches' poll is one of 14 Division I programs to have a goal differential of +10 or better, having outscored their opponents, 13-3, through five contests. Marshall's 13 strikes are also ranked 16th in the nation.
Scoring has been balanced for The Herd with five different players registering two goals this season. Alexander Stjernegaard has dished out a team-best four assists, good for fifth in the country. Goalkeeper Aleksa Janjic has also been stellar in net with a .333 goals-against average, third-lowest in the country.
