St. John’s Downs Bryant, 3-2, En Route to Jack Kaiser Volleyball Classic Championship

Wiktoria Kowalczyk named 10th Annual Jack Kaiser Volleyball Classic MVP
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's volleyball team took down Bryant, 3-2, to win the 10th Annual Jack Kaiser Volleyball Classic on Saturday afternoon inside Carnesecca Arena.
After winning the first two frames, St. John's (11-3) dropped the next two before rebounding to win the fifth set. The scores of the sets were 25-16, 25-22, 22-25, 22-25, 15-10.
After the tournament, Wiktoria Kowalczyk was named the 10th Annual Jack Kaiser Classic MVP. Erin Jones and Bree Martin were tabbed to the Jack Kaiser Volleyball Classic All-Tournament Team.
Kowalczyk was magnificent for the Red Storm, tallying 122 assists at 11.09 per set with 20 digs, six service aces and five total blocks across the tournament. Jones registered 48 kills at 4.36 per set, 31 digs, eight aces and eight helpers while Martin added 26 digs in two starts at libero this weekend.
With the win, the Red Storm have now claimed eight straight Jack Kaiser Volleyball Classic Titles, dating back to the 2016 season.
Jones earned her second-straight and sixth double of the year on 17 kills and 11 digs. The junior also matched her career high in aces with four.
Ana Benjamim notched the first double-double of her career, posting 11 kills and 10 digs. Lucrezia Lodi logged 14 kills and a career-high six total blocks.
Kowalczyk paced the match with 45 helpers paired with three service aces, three digs and two blocks. Ludovica Zola also totaled six rejections against the Bulldogs. Martin led the contest with 14 digs.
Bryant took a 6-3 opening lead in the first set, but the St. John's used a 6-1 stretch, sparked by a Jones' kill to take a two-point, 9-7 lead. After the frame was tied at 10, Kowalczyk served up five straight points to start a 10-2 rally for the Red Storm, growing its lead to eight, 20-12. The Johnnies kept control of the set, ending the first game, 25-16. Jones slammed down seven kills with three digs in the opening stanza.
The Bulldogs raced out to a 4-0 edge at the start of the second game, forcing the Johnnies to call their first timeout of the set. St. John's quickly responded with a massive 15-4 run that featured seven kills between Jones, Stambrowska, Zola and Benjamim to lead, 15-8. Bryant proceeded to go on a 14-7 rally tying the frame at 22. Despite the Bulldog momentum in the back half of the set, a final 3-0 spurt for the Johnnies gave them a 25-22 victory and a 2-0 advantage in the match. Lodi picked up five blocks in the second game.
Bryant earned a 6-2 advantage at the beginning of the third stanza, causing the Red Storm to call a timeout. After talking things over, St. John's put together an 8-4 scoring period ignited by a Stambrowska kill, taking an 11-10 edge. After trading points to 17-17, Bryant put down six consecutive scores to lead, 23-17, but the Johnnies used two attack errors and a Lodi kill to cut their deficit to three, 23-20. Bryant secured the third set victory, 25-22, despite two contested set points.

With the Red Storm leading 15-11, Bryant scored four straight points, retying the set, 15-15. Knotted at 16, the Bulldogs registered two consecutive points to lead 18-16, which they carried to a 25-22 set four victory, evening the match at 2-2. The contested frame featured six ties and four lead changes.
