Red Storm and Nittany Lions to square off for ninth time in program history
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's men's soccer team (2-3-3) will play four of its next five games in Queens as the squad welcomes Penn State (3-5-0) on Tuesday.
Kick-off from Belson Stadium is slated for 7 p.m. Tuesday's match will be streamed on ESPN+ and live stats will be available on RedStormSports.com. The Johnnies will celebrate Fraternity and Sorority Life Night at Belson Stadium with the first 350 Greek life students receiving a free t-shirt when they check in.
The Johnnies battled to a 1-0 setback in the BIG EAST opener against Xavier on Friday. The Red Storm mustered 16 shot attempts to Xavier's six on the evening.
Red Storm Head Coach Dr. David Masur will look to become the seventh men's soccer coach in NCAA history to reach the 400-win plateau with a singular Division I program. The 34-year head coach of St. John's, who sits with 399 victories in Queens, will also be the second active Division I head coach to reach the milestone with a win on Friday, joining Maryland's Sasho Cirovski (430). The Johnnies are also closing in on 500 triumphs as a program, sitting with 498 victories entering Tuesday's slate.
Friday's matchup will mark the ninth all-time meeting between the Johnnies and Nittany Lions. The Red Storm is in search of its first win over Penn State since Sept. 8, 2013, when it secured a 1-0 victory at Belson on a game-winning goal from Casey Osborne on a feed from Tim Parker. St. John's is also 2-0 when hosting Penn State.
Masur and Nittany Lions' Head Coach Jeff Cook will square off on the sidelines for just the third time in their storied careers. The Johnnies took down Cook's Dartmouth Big Green, 1-0, in the 2005 NCAA Regional Second Round behind a Matt Groenwald strike in the 57th minute. Cook's Penn State squad earned a 2-0 win against the Red Storm last season.
Penn State snapped its three-match losing streak with a 2-1 victory over Michigan State on Sept. 20. Aboubacar Camara and Christian Dionne each netted their second goal of the season, matching Matthew Henderson and Caden Grabfelder for the team lead. Dionne is also the team leader in assists (3) and points (7) through eight matches.
As a group, the Nittany Lions are second in the Big 10 with 3.5 saves per game. Goalkeeper Andrew Cooke has made six of the team's eight starts this season, averaging 4.0 stops per contest, also good for second while earning top-50 status in NCAA Division I (50th).
St. John's will remain at Belson to continue conference play against Villanova with a 7 p.m. match on Saturday. The Johnnies shut out the Wildcats, 3-0, on the road last season.
