St. John's comes into the game after a pivotal 80-68 win against Villanova in front of a crowd of 18,178 at MSG on Saturday night. The Red Storm and Wildcats traded blows all night as the game featured 18 lead changes before the Johnnies ended the game on a 14-3 run to secure a double-digit victory. The Red Storm are off to its best start to league play in 24 years and a win Tuesday would move the squad to 6-1 in BIG EAST competition for the first since 1998-99, when it started the conference campaign 8-1 and went onto the NCAA Tournament Elite Eight.
RJ Luis Jr. led the Johnnies past the Wildcats with a season-high 30-point effort, including 23 points in the latter 20 minutes. The junior went 16-for-20 (80%) from the charity stripe, which marks the most made free throws by a St. John's player since Marcus Hatten on Feb. 9, 2002, and ranks fourth-highest in St. John's men's basketball history. The Miami, Fla., native was named BIG EAST Player of the Week on Monday, becoming the first Red Storm player to earn the accolade since Joel Soriano on Nov. 28, 2022.
Luis Jr. recorded 10 rebounds in Saturday's win for a third straight double-double and sixth of the season. The wing joins teammate Zuby Ejiofor for the league lead and 31st nationally in that category. Ejiofor has been the catalyst for a dominant rebounding stretch as of late. The Garland, Texas native ranks third in the BIG EAST, averaging 8.1 boards per game and has collected seven or more rebounds in each of his last 14 contests. The junior ranks second in NCAA Division I, pulling down 4.7 offensive rebounds per game.
St. John's has dominated the glass, boasting a plus-18 rebounding margin over its last two outings. The Red Storm have risen up the national rankings, checking in at eighth in rebounds per game (42.0), 10th in offensive boards per game (14.9) and 22nd in rebounding margin (+7.8), all marks that lead the BIG EAST.
The Johnnies rank sixth in the country in defensive efficiency, according to the advanced metrics of KenPomery.com. The swarming defense allows just 91.9 points per 100 possessions and is forcing 15.6 turnovers per game. The Red Storm rank fourth nationally averaging 6.1 blocks per game.
The two charter members of the BIG EAST will meet for the 125th time on Tuesday night with St. John's leading the all-time series, 67-57. The Johnnies have won seven straight meetings, and a win on Tuesday would extend the streak to eight and mark the longest winning streak for the Red Storm in the series since it won 10 consecutive meetings with the Hoyas from 1949-72. The program holds a 27-19 all-time record against Georgetown at the World's Most Famous Arena.
The Hoyas are resurging in the second year under Head Coach Ed Cooley, taking just 12 games to surpass last year's win total. Georgetown holds a 12-4 record on the year and a 3-2 mark in league competition. The Hoyas are on a two-game skid coming off a pair of eight-point losses to nationally-ranked opponents in Marquette and UConn last week.
Georgetown is led by freshman standout and four-time BIG EAST Freshman of the Week honoree Thomas Sorber. The big man is averaging 14.8 points, 8.5 rebounds and 2.4 blocks per game. Micah Peavy ranks second in the league and 25th in the country logging 2.3 steals per game.
Following Tuesday's matchup, the Red Storm will hit the road to face Seton Hall on Jan. 18 at 8 p.m. on FS1 at the Prudential Center in Newark.
