St. John’s to Welcome Villanova on Saturday

The Red Storm will celebrate the program’s 50th anniversary during Saturday’s game
QUEENS, N.Y. –The St. John's women's basketball team will welcome Villanova to celebrate its 50th anniversary of the program on Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. inside Carnesecca Arena.
Saturday's tilt will be streamed on the BIG EAST Digital Network on FloSports with Johnny Gadamowitz and Maria Marino on the call from Carnesecca Arena. Live Stats will be available on RedStormSports.com.
St. John's will host its 50th Anniversary Game on Saturday, where it will celebrate its storied 50-year history of women's basketball. Additionally, the St. John's athletic department and the women's basketball program will honor the inaugural 1974-75 team that was coached by Vickie Kresse with its "Pioneers of the Game" award during the game.
The Red Storm will look to bounce back after falling to No. 6/6 UConn, 71-45, inside Carnesecca Arena on Wednesday. St. John's hosted a crowd of 4,917 fans that packed the stands in the BIG EAST contest.
Ber'Nyah Mayo reached double-figures for the third-straight game and the ninth time in her last 12 appearances against the Huskies. The senior guard posted 10 points and sunk a triple for the second consecutive contest.
Kylie Lavelle followed up Monday's BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll nod by scoring seven points on 3-of-4 shooting on Wednesday. The junior also drained a 3-pointer against UConn and has now sunk a triple in four straight appearances. The Moosic, Pa., native leads the Johnnies, shooting 53.5 percent from the floor so far this season.
Ariel Little tallied a season-high eight points, all in the final frame, and dished out a team-high three assists against the Huskies. The New York City product also drilled a season-high two 3-pointers and pulled down three boards in the team's last contest.
St. John's made 85 percent (6-7) of its free throws on Wednesday, marking the 11th time this season the squad finished 75 percent or better from the charity stripe. On the season, the Red Storm is 17th in the country in free throw percentage, making 78 percent of its attempts.
On the defensive end, the Johnnies have yet to have an opponent score more than 75 points against them this season. The squad enters Saturday's matchup ranked 15th nationally and second in the BIG EAST in scoring defense, holding opposing teams to just 54.8 points per game.
St. John's is set to host Villanova for the 81st meeting in the all-time series and will take on the Wildcats for the second time this season on Saturday afternoon. Villanova leads the all-time series, 52-28, but the Red Storm hold a slim 17-16 edge at home.
The Johnnies fell to Villanova, 71-57, in its BIG EAST opener on Dec. 21 inside Finneran Pavilion. Lashae Dwyer, Ariana Vanderhoop and Skye Owen all registered double-digit points in Pennsylvania.
The Wildcats will return to Queens for the first time since Feb. 15, 2023, with an even 9-9 record and a 3-3 mark in the BIG EAST. The team is coming off a 66-55 victory over DePaul at Finneran Pavilion.

Jasmine Boscoe has engineered a strong freshman season, leading the Wildcats offensively with 15.5 points per game on 42.5 percent field goal shooting. The guard also posts team-bests of 4.2 rebounds and 4.1 assists per game. Maddie Webber has averaged 12.7 points per contest and shoots an efficient 31.4 percent from three-point land.
