Skye Owen Catches Fire Late to Rally St. John’s Past Providence, 62-55

The Red Storm mount comeback from 12-point second half deficit
QUEENS, N.Y. –Skye Owen caught fire in the final quarter to propel the St. John's women's basketball (12-9, 2-8 BIG EAST) team past Providence (9-14, 2-8 BIG EAST) on Wednesday, 62-55.
The junior scored 11 points in the fourth quarter, including three triples over the final 6:51 regulation as the Red Storm outscored the Friars, 24-16, over the final 10 minutes, The Red Storm rallied from a 12-point third quarter deficit engineering a 29-8 scoring run during the third and fourth quarters to earn the victory.
Owen was lights out from beyond-the-arc, shooting a perfect 5-for-5 from 3-point range to lead all scorers with 17 points. The New York City native's five 3-pointers marked a career-high and the most by a Red Storm player this season.
Lashae Dwyer added 16 points and shot 5-of-6 from the free throw line in the winning effort. The senior has finished in double-figures 17 times in 21 contests.
Jailah Donald was the third Johnnie to reach double-digits, tallying 11 points and matched a career-high with seven boards. Ber'Nyah Mayo padded the box score with seven points, tied a season-high with six assists and logged three steals.
Julie Bahati provided a boost off the bench defensively and logging an evening full of career-bests in points (6), rebounds (4), free throws (4) and minutes (13).
The Red Storm 81.0 percent (17-21) from the free throw line, marking the ninth time this season the squad has cashed in on over 80 percent of its attempts from the charity stripe.
As the battle began, the two sides traded blows as Dwyer tallied five of the first seven points for the Johnnies. Owen and Donald cashed in from long-range to construct a 6-0 spurt over a 0:43 span to jump out to a 15-9 advantage. Providence made a free throw for the final point as the Red Storm were in front by five, 15-10, at the conclusion of the opening frame.
In the following frame, Dwyer swiped it away from the Providence ballhandler and weaved her way to the rim. The Johnnies expanded their advantage after makes from downtown by Owen and Donald, to stretch lead to eight, 23-15, with six minutes left in the half. St. John's will be back in action on Sunday when it hosts Xavier for a National Girls and Women in Sports Day celebration at 2 p.m. from Carnesecca Arena.
