Volleyball Opens Homestand with Loss to DePaul, 3-0

The Red Storm are back in action tomorrow at 5 p.m.
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's volleyball team (5-13, 1-4 BIG EAST) fell in straight sets to DePaul (10-6, 3-2 BIG EAST) at Carnesecca Arena on Friday evening. Despite the first two sets being decided by two points, the Red Storm ultimately came up short in the third frame. The scores of the sets were 27-29, 23-25, and 15-25.
Martina Ghezzi tied her career-high with 14 kills to lead the match. Erin Jones paced the offense with 19 assists. On the defensive side of the net, Ghezzi secured a team-high nine digs and two total blocks.
Chloe Bell jump-started the Red Storm offense with the first two kills of the match. The two teams would exchange points in the early part of the set, playing to 16 ties and seven lead changes. With neither team allowing more than a two-point advantage, DePaul was the first to set point at 24-23. Jones fired a kill to even the set to knot the set once again, and a Ghezzi kill triggered the first set point for St. John's at 26-25. In the end, the Blue Demons would hold to take the first set, 29-27.
To start the second stanza, another series of tie scores ensued. With DePaul up 5-4, the Johnnies went on a 5-0 run to grow their advantage. At 13-8 the Blue Demons called a timeout and engineered an identical 5-0 run to knot the contest once again at 13 apiece. Later in the set, the visitors erased a three-point deficit and went up 23-20. The Red Storm clawed their way back to 23-22, but DePaul once again held on to claim the second stanza, 25-23.
The third frame saw St. John's build an early 7-4 lead out of the gate. DePaul battled its way back and took the lead on a 6-0 run, 10-7. The Blue Demons continued to grow their to as many as seven at 18-11 before Ella Parker blocked a shot to try to thwart the run. The visitor's offense continued to roll, taking the third set, 25-15, and winning the match 3-0.
St. John's returns to Carnesecca Arena tomorrow for a match with Marquette. The contest will serve as the teams "Dig Pink" match, and the first 300 guests in attendance will receive a "One Storm. One Cause." Pink t-shirt. First serve against the Golden Eagles is set for 5 p.m.
