Against non-conference foes, that average margin of victory increases to 25.5 points per game.
St. John's returns to Queens following a 103-96 loss at the hands of then-No. 15/16 Alabama this past Saturday at Madison Square Garden. Trailing by as many as 11 early in the second half, the Johnnies raced back to take a two-point lead, 84-82, with just over seven minutes remaining. Ahead by one, 87-86, one minute later, St. John's saw Alabama uncork a 14-1 run over the next five minutes to snap the Red Storm's 12-game winning streak at "The Mecca."
Preseason BIG EAST Player of the Year Zuby Ejiofor led the way for St. John's against the Crimson Tide, finishing with 27 points and 10 rebounds for his first double-double of the season. He scored 21 of his 27 points in the first half, a new personal best for a single stanza, and grabbed five of his boards off the offensive glass. Last season, Ejiofor led the BIG EAST in double-doubles (10) and topped the nation in offensive rebounds per game (4.4).
Coupled with his 17-point, six-rebound outing against Quinnipiac, the 6-foot-9 senior was named the season's first BIG EAST Player of the Week on Monday. He averaged 22.0 points and 8.0 rebounds while 72.7% shooting from the floor, including a 66.7% effort from beyond the arc. Last season, the First Team All-BIG EAST selection was named to the league's weekly honor roll five times.
Three other Johnnies finished in double figures against the Crimson Tide. Bryce Hopkins logged his best game as a member of the Red Storm, scoring 15 of his 19 points in the opening half. Oziyah Sellers and Ian Jackson tallied 14 points and three assists apiece. Sellers added seven rebounds in a game-high 34 minutes of action.
Dillon Mitchell finished with seven points, four rebounds and four assists against Alabama. The senior went 2-for-2 from the floor, bumping his season-long field goal percentage to 81.8% (9-for-11).
William & Mary heads to Queens with a record of 2-1 following its first loss of the season at Richmond, 90-86, on Tuesday night.
Three members of the Tribe are averaging double figures, led by senior guard Kyle Pulliam at 13.7 points per outing.
Last year, the program's first under the direction of Head Coach Brian Earl, William & Mary finished fourth in the CAA after posting an 11-7 record in league play, a seven-win improvement from the previous season. The Tribe was picked to finish fourth again in a preseason poll of the league's coaches. Senior guard Chase Lowe was tabbed to the Preseason All-CAA Second Team while Pulliam earned an honorable mention nod. Lowe is averaging 6.3 points, 4.7 rebounds and a 4.7 assists per game this season.
St. John's and William & Mary will meet for the fourth time in the history of the two programs. The Red Storm has won all three meetings, the last of which was a 74-59 victory on Nov. 7, 2011. Moe Harkless and God'sgift Achiuwa scored 17 points apiece to lead the Johnnies in that win.
After hosting the Tribe, the Red Storm will welcome Bucknell for a 7 p.m. tip-off on Thursday, Nov. 20. That game will air on TNT and 1050 AM ESPN New York.
