The Red Storm men’s basketball team will return to BIG EAST action on New Year’s Eve in the nation’s capital
QUEENS, N.Y. - The RV/ No. 25 St. John's men's basketball team will return to BIG EAST action on New Year's Eve when it closes out 2025 in the nation's capital for a battle with Georgetown.
The ball will tip-off at 8 p.m. from Capital One Arena, just hours before it drops in Times Square to ring in the new year. The 127th meeting between the two charter members of the BIG EAST Conference will air on FS1 with Ed Cohen and Phil Martelli on the telecast.
An LEARFIELD St. John's Radio Network broadcast will be available with John Minko and Vin Parise on ESPN New York 1050 AM. The radio call will also be available on ESPN New York App, the Varsity Network, TuneIn, Sirius XM Channel 210 or 203, the SiriusXM App and the St. John's Red Storm App.
Right before Christmas, the Red Storm closed out non-conference play with an 85-59 victory over Harvard on Tuesday. Ian Jackson, Bryce Hopkins and Zuby Ejiofor all finished with 14 points to lead all scorers in the Red Storm's final contest at Carnesecca Arena this season. Under Rick Pitino, the Johnnies have gone 19-0 inside their on-campus venue and won those contests by an average margin of 24.6 points per game.
Ejiofor was tabbed to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Monday after his 14-point, nine-rebound, four-assist outing against The Crimson. The team captain averages 13.8 points, 7.2 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 2.5 blocks per game, the latter of which ranks 14th in NCAA Division I.
St. John's returned to the USA TODAY Coaches poll this week at No. 25 after a one week absence. The Red Storm have been ranked in 18 of the last 19 Coaches' polls dating back to Jan. 20, 2025. There was no Associated Press poll released this week and the Johnnies accumulated 23 votes in the most recent edition of the media rankings on Dec. 22.
The Red Storm (8-4, 1-0 BIG EAST) will return to BIG EAST action for the remainder of the regular season. On Dec. 16, St. John's captured its fifth straight victory in a conference opener as it downed DePaul, 79-66, in Queens. Last year, the Johnnies tied a league record with 18 conference victories and swept eight BIG EAST opponents.
St. John's has been smooth in transition this season ranking 11th in NCAA Division I with 18.3 fastbreak points per game. The Red Storm has also gotten to the line with ease averaging 27.9 free throw attempts and 20.8 makes per outing, both marks lead the BIG EAST and rank top-13 in the country as of Dec. 29.
The Red Storm will meet its second most frequently faced opponent for the first time ever on New Year's Eve. St. John's leads the all-time series with the Hoyas, 69-57, and has won each of the last nine meetings over Georgetown. In last year's contest in Washington D.C., the Johnnies won their third straight at Capital One Arena, 66-41, on Jan. 28, 2025. The 41 points by Georgetown (9-4, 1-1 BIG EAST) marked the lowest ever scoring total by a St. John's BIG EAST opponent in 46 years of league play and the lowest of any opponent since it defeated Drake, 82-39, on Nov. 26, 2010.
St. John's current nine-game winning streak marks the second longest in a series that dates back to Dec. 8, 1909. The Johnnies won 10 straight against the Hoyas from Feb. 5, 1949 until Dec. 9, 1972.
The Red Storm will seek its first win on the final day of the calendar year in 65 years. St. John's last victory on New Year's Eve came on Dec. 31, 1960 when it outlasted Utah, 73-65, at Madison Square Garden at the ECAC Holiday Festival.
Georgetown enters the contest with a 9-4 overall record and an even 1-1 mark in league competition. The Hoyas have won three of their last four and are 7-1 at home this season. Ed Cooley's group is one of the best ball-handling teams in the country ranking 10th nationally in assist-to-turnover ratio (+1.85) and second in fewest turnovers per game (8.8).
The Hoyas are guided by the guard tandem of Malik Mack (14.5 PPG) and KJ Lewis (14.3 PPG) who lead the squad offensively. Mack ranks fourth in the BIG EAST dishing out 4.5 assists per game and Lewis paces the league logging 2.1 steals per contest.
Following Wednesday's road contest, St. John's will host Providence for its first of nine BIG EAST regular season home games at Madison Square Garden.
