Five Johnnies finished in double-figures as the Red Storm knock off the Golden Eagles in Milwaukee
MILWAUKEE (Dec. 29, 2025) – Led by a balanced scoring attack, the St. John's women's basketball team (12-3, 2-2 BIG EAST) clawed out a pivotal BIG EAST road victory at Marquette (8-5, 2-2 BIG EAST), 73-66, on Monday night to close out 2025.
Five Johnnies finished in double-figures for the first time this season to propel the Red Storm to a victory at the Al McGuire Center on Monday night. Beautiful Waheed, a Milwaukee native, netted a team-high 14 points during her homecoming.
Shaulana Wagner finished with a near double-double, totaling 11 points and a game-high nine assists.
Brooke Moore logged 13 points, Jailah Donald added a season-high 12 points on 4-of-6 shooting, Daniela Abies chipped in 11 points and eight boards off the bench.
Kylie Lavelle filled the box score with seven points, eight boards and three blocks in Milwaukee. The Red Storm outrebounded the Golden Eagles, 40-33, with Lavelle and Abies posting eight apiece.
As the action got underway, the Red Storm engineered a 7-0 run to grab its first lead of the evening. Waheed took off on the break for an and one finish and Donald tallied a fastbreak bucket to close the spurt, 11-8, with 3:50 remaining in the first. The Johnnies scored nine of their first 11 points in transition. After Marquette tied it up, Donald dialed up a 3-pointer from the top of the key to go back in front by three, 14-11. In the final possession of the opening frame with the score tied, 14-14, Wagner swatted the pass into the paint as Waheed collected the steal. St. John's took off to the other end as Donald fed Lavelle in the post for the easy lay-in to close the opening with a two-point edge, 16-14.
In the second stanza, Abies and Wagner added baskets to bring the advantage to six, 20-14, in the opening minute of the second quarter. The Golden Eagles responded with a 7-2 stretch to climb within a single point, 22-21, with seven minutes to go in the half. Waheed and Donald triples and Wagner capitalized on the old-fashioned 3-point play as the Johnnies' lead grew to their largest of the night, 31-24, with 3:35 left in the half. After Marquette got back within one, Wagner threw up a long-range triple as the buzzer sounded that rattled home to give St. John's a four-point edge, 36-32, at halftime.
In the third frame, the two squads traded blows as neither team led by more than five points. Moore drove hard to the lane, getting one to go at the cup, 46-44. The Golden Eagles jumped back into the lead courtesy of a Jordan Muelemans triple as the two went back and forth. The Red Storm turned the tide with five straight points capped off by a Lavelle basket to bring the scoreline to 51-47, in the final minute of the third. Janeya Grant closed out the scoring, rolling off the curl for the lay-up to carry a 53-50 cushion into the fourth quarter.
Heading into a highly contested final 10 minutes, Waheed came up clutch, rattling off a 5-0 solo run early in the frame. The junior knocked down a mid-range jumper before a block by Lavelle led straight into a triple from the Milwaukee native to propel the Red Storm to a six-point advantage, 58-52, with 8:50 to play. The Golden Eagles responded once again, knotting the score at 60. After denying the Marquette go-ahead bucket on the defensive end, Wagner found Lavelle for a corner triple to put St. John's back in front, 63-60, with 6:11 to go. As the clock dwindled into the final minutes with the Golden Eagles down by a point, Abies grabbed a crucial offensive board and second-chance bucket to go up, 67-64, with 2:32 on the clock. In the closing moments, the Johnnies locked down Marquette defensively, holding the Golden Eagles to 1-of-7 shooting down the stretch. Donald and Waheed knocked down free throws over the final 30 seconds to ice the game and secure the road victory.
The Red Storm will return home to ring in 2026 when it hosts DePaul on New Year's Day from Carnesecca Arena at 2 p.m.
