No. 9/8 St. John’s to Host No. 24/21 Creighton on “Johnnies Day” at Madison Square Garden

The top two men’s basketball teams in the BIG EAST standings will faceoff at The World’s Most Famous Arena on Sunday
QUEENS, N.Y. – The No. 9/8 St. John's men's basketball team (21-4, 12-2 BIG EAST) will host another nationally-ranked opponent with No. 24/21 Creighton (18-7, 11-3 BIG EAST) visiting Madison Square Garden on Sunday for Johnnies Day. Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m. on FS1.
St. John's University will hold its third annual Johnnies Day, celebrating the school's proud contributions globally and rich history dating back to 1870, with a doubleheader at The World's Most Famous Arena. Following the St. John's men's basketball team's contest against Creighton, the Red Storm women's basketball team will take on Butler at approximately 5:30 p.m. in Midtown.
Both St. John's basketball programs hold a combined 4-0 record on Johnnies Day with the men's basketball team earning a pair of ranks wins over then- No. 20/17 Providence in 2023 and then-No. 15/15 Creighton last year.

Sunday's contest will be a matchup between the top two teams in the BIG EAST standings as St. John's holds a one game advantage over the Bluejays. FOX Sports announcers John Fanta and Donny Marshall have the call from Midtown Manhattan.
An audio broadcast of the game on the LEARFIELD Red Storm Sports Network with John Minko and Vin Parise will also be available on a variety of platforms including the Varsity Network App, TuneIn Radio, RedStormSports.com and the St. John's Red Storm mobile app. The radio broadcast can also be heard on SiriusXM radio channel 85 and via the SiriusXM App.
St. John's enters the contest coming off a narrow setback at Villanova, 73-71, which snapped its 10-game winning streak. The Red Storm rallied all the way back from an 11-point deficit in the second half and took a 71-70 lead on Simeon Wilcher's third 3-pointer of the game with 27.3 seconds to go. On the ensuing Wildcats' possession, Tyler Perkins answered with his fourth triple of the contest to put Villanova back on top. Wilcher's game-winning 3-point attempt at the buzzer was just off the mark as the Wildcats escaped with the victory.
The Red Storm has won 17-straight regular season home games dating back to last season, which ranks as the longest active streak in NCAA Division I. St. John's looks for its ninth-consecutive regular season victory at Madison Square Garden that would match the program's longest streak since the 1999-2000 and 2000-01 seasons.
This season, the Johnnies hold a 15-0 record at home, marking the highest win total amongst power conference programs. St. John's has also won 11 of their 15 contests played in New York City by double-digits and are averaging 81.3 points per game at home.
St. John's wing Aaron Scott filled up the box score on Wednesday at Finneran Pavilion, recording a season-high 22 points and he matched a career-high with five makes from beyond-the-arc. The senior wing is just 11 points away from reaching 1,000 on his career.
After garnering several national, conference and regional player of the week awards, RJ Luis Jr. delivered his 24th double figure scoring performance on Wednesday in 25 games this season. The Miami ranks fourth in the BIG EAST averaging 17.4 points per game and stands only five points shy of 1,000 points for his career.
Graduate student Kadary Richmond logged his second double-double in the last three games with 17 points and a season-high 10 assists at Villanova. During BIG EAST play, the Brooklyn native is averaging 13.9 points on 51.6 percent shooting, 5.9 rebounds, 5.2 assists and 2.4 steals per contest.
St. John's and Creighton will meet for the 31st time in series history and the first time ever with both teams ranked in the AP Top 25. The Bluejays won the first meeting this season in Omaha on New Year's Eve, 57-56. In the last matchup at MSG, the Johnnies topped then-No. 15/15 Creighton, 80-66, on Feb. 25, 2024. The Bluejays are seeking their fifth ranked win of the season and third during league play. Creighton also ranks fourth in NCAA Division I in defensive rebounding and first in fewest fouls per game.
Three-time BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year Ryan Kalkbrenner continues to dominate down low, averaging 19.0 points, 8.5 rebounds and 2.8 blocks per game. The 7-foot-1 center ranks fourth in the nation in swats and third in field goal percentage shooting at a 66.9 clip. Creighton guard Steven Ashworth logs 6.8 assists per game, which checks in at eighth in NCAA Division I and leads the BIG EAST.
