The Johnnies and Blue Hens will square off for the third straight year
QUEENS, N.Y. – Following last Saturday's thrilling come-from-behind 15-14 victory over NJIT, the St. John's lacrosse team will head to Newark, Del., to face No. 18/16 Delaware on Saturday. Faceoff from Delaware Stadium is set for noon.
The game will be streamed on FloSports, and live stats will be available on RedStormSports.com.
In the Johnnies' opener against the Highlanders, the attacking trio of Ryan Ormond, Adrian Nowak and Brian Kelly combined for 22 points, propelling the Red Storm to its first season-opening win since 2021. Brian Kelly's lone goal of his six-point performance with 3:25 remaining in the fourth quarter gave the Red Storm a 15-14 lead it would not relinquish in a game that featured nine ties and nine lead changes.
Nowak's 10 points set a career-best and notched him BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week honors. The 10 points are the most by a Red Storm player since Kieran McCardle's 13 in 2013, and the redshirt sophomore's seven assists tie the single-game program record since reinstatement in 2005.
Ormond became the first Johnnie since 2022 to score six goals in a game and the first to find the back of the net six times in the team's season opener since the program's reinstatement in 2005. The Waxhaw, N.C., native won BIG EAST Freshman of the Week honors, the first Johnnie to claim the award since Kelly in 2022.
Kelly's five assists and game-winning goal landed the senior on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for the second time since the start of last season. The six points over the weekend give him 142 for his career, moving past Mike Madsen for sole possession of sixth place on the program's all-time list
Danny Koch and Mitch Campbell achieved their first career goals, while Dan Koban and Dylan Lee added to the scoresheet against NJIT. Bobby Seel also scored, extending his point streak to a team-best 17 games. Dickinson transfer Patrick Scarborough made 14 saves in his first game with St. John's, earning the win between the pipes. The 15 goals the Johnnies scored are the program's most in a game since netting 17 against Fairfield in 2022.
Delaware upset No. 18/19 Utah last Saturday in its first game of 2025 behind freshman Bennett Parmer's four-goal performance, which included the game-winner with 54 seconds remaining in regulation. Brendan Powers, Jason Kolar and John McCurry each added two goals, while Cory Capri and Jack Kolbe netted their first scores in a Delaware uniform. The Blue Hens trailed by as many as two goals before rallying to earn win No. 66 for Head Coach Ben DeLuca.
With the win, the Blue Hens entered the Inside Lacrosse media poll at No. 18 and the USILA Coaches Poll at No. 16. Palmer was named CAA Offensive Player of the Week following his four-goal performance. Prior to the season, netminder Kevin Ellington, who made 15 saves against Utah, was named to the Tewaaraton Award Watch List and a USA Lacrosse Preseason All-American Honorable Mention. The Blue Hens were picked second in the CAA preseason poll.
Saturday will mark the third straight season the Red Storm and the Blue Hens will square off. When the two squads met last season at DaSilva Memorial Field in Queens, Kelly, Nowak and Seel combined for six points, but Delaware walked away with a 17-6 win.
After Saturday's contest in The First State, the Johnnies will have a quick turnaround, facing Quinnipiac on Tuesday in Queens in the first home contest of 2025. Faceoff from Cox Family Field at Belson Stadium is set for 3 p.m. on ESPN+.
