The Red Storm are coming off a 65-43 victory over Butler at Madison Square Garden
QUEENS, N.Y. – Fresh off a 65-43 win over Butler at Madison Square Garden, the St. John's women's basketball team will head to Omaha, Neb. to take on No. 23/23 Creighton on Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
Wednesday's tilt will be streamed on the BIG EAST Digital Network on FloSports with Josh Petersen and Jon Schriner on the call from D.J. Sokol Arena. Live Stats will be available on RedStormSports.com.
Last time out, the Red Storm (14-11, 4-10 BIG EAST) dominated Butler, 65-43, inside Madison Square Garden to cap off Johnnies Day on Sunday night. St. John's strung together a dominant third quarter to pull away, outscoring the Bulldogs 22-6 during the frame. The Johnnies limited Butler to just two made field goals in the third stanza as it brought its lead up to as many as 26 points.
Lashae Dwyer was tabbed to her fifth BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll of the season on Monday morning, after averaging 16.0 points, 4.5 rebounds and 3.5 steals while shooting 50 percent from downtown against No. 7/7 UConn and Butler.
Dwyer went off for 21 points to lead all scorers on 8-for-12 shooting from the floor and 4-for-6 from 3-point range on Sunday. The senior's 20-plus point performance marked her third of the season.
The Toronto native came away with three steals on Sunday for her third-consecutive game with three or more swipes. Dwyer's 74 steals and 2.9 swipes per game lead the BIG EAST and rank 12th and 14th in the country, respectively. Additionally, the senior is two steals shy of moving into the top-10 all-time in program history.
Phoenix Gedeon put together an efficient outing in Midtown Manhattan, delivering a near double-double with a season-high 13 points on 6-of-8 shooting and a game-high nine rebounds off the bench.
Ber'Nyah Mayo was the third Johnnie to finish in double-digits against Butler, adding 11 points and a game-high five assists. The graduate student has reached double-figures in points in 10 of her last 11 games and has dished out five or more assists in five of her last eight appearances.
The Johnnies played incredible defense against the Bulldogs on Sunday, limiting their opponent to under 45 points for the sixth time this season. The group sits second in the conference and 20th in the nation in scoring defense, holding opposing teams to just 55.5 points per game
The Red Storm forced Butler into 22 turnovers at Madison Square Garden on Sunday night. The squad has now forced 20 or more turnovers in a single contest four times this season
St. John's and No. 23/25 Creighton will matchup for the 28th time in the all-time series on Wednesday. The Bluejays hold a slight 15-13 all-time advantage over the Red Storm and have won each of the last four meetings.
Earlier this season, Creighton earned a 75-56 victory in Queens on Dec. 28, inside Carnesecca Arena. Dwyer led the Red Storm with 17 points in the nationally televised matchup. The Johnnies' last victory over the Bluejays came on Dec. 4, 2022, when it knocked off the No. 13/14 Bluejays, 66-62, in Queens.
Creighton will welcome St. John's to Omaha with a stellar 21-4 overall record and a 13-1 mark in BIG EAST play, good enough for second place in the league. In their last outing, the Bluejays took down Georgetown, 70-48, at D.J. Sokol Arena. Creighton has won five straight contests and its only BIG EAST loss has come at the hands of No. 6/6 UConn, 72-61, on Jan. 25.
The Bluejays are led by a high-scoring tandem of All-BIG EAST selections in Lauren Jensen (18.0 PPG) and Morgan Maly (17.5 PPG). Maly ranks 14th in the country in 3-point shooting, cashing in on 44.8 percent of her attempts.
Following Wednesday's contest, St. John's will return home to host Seton Hall on Feb. 23 at 4:30 p.m. inside Carnesecca Arena.
