St. John’s Set for Winthrop’s Garnet and Gold Tournament

The Red Storm will play five games across the weekend in Rock Hill, S.C.
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's softball team is set for Winthrop's Garnet and Gold Tournament in Rock Hill, S.C. at Terry Field from Feb. 21-23.
The Red Storm will open the tournament on Friday by taking on Le Moyne at 12:30 p.m. before battling Youngstown State at 3 p.m. On Saturday, the Johnnies will face Brown at 12:30 p.m. and Winthrop at 3 p.m. Play will conclude on Sunday with another match-up against Le Moyne at 10 a.m.
St. John's game with Winthrop will be streamed on ESPN+. Live Stats for all games will be provided on RedStormSports.com.
The Johnnies enter the tournament with a 3-6-1 record on the season after picking up a pair of wins at The Fonseca Memorial Tournament at USF last weekend. St. John's opened its time in Tampa, Fla., by taking down Penn State in walk-off fashion with a 4-3 victory. On the final day of the tournament, the Red Storm defeated Loyola-Chicago, 5-1, to end on a winning note.
St. John's has been led by its pitching staff to open the season, maintaining a 2.99 team ERA and striking out 74 batters through the first two weekends. Juniors Loreley Francia and Ana Serafinko lead the staff, accounting for 57 of the 68 possible innings inside the circle. Freshman Jailynn Banda picked up her first career start last weekend, tossing a complete seven innings and striking out five batters against the Nittany Lions on Saturday.
Francia has been dominant for the Red Storm inside the circle. The right-hander's 1.71 ERA ranks second in the BIG EAST, while her 34 punchouts and 32.2 innings pitched top the conference. The Spring, Texas product has totaled two wins this season, including St. John's last victory against the Ramblers, allowing just one run while striking out seven batters across the full seven innings.
Cassidy Stouffer has paced the Red Storm offense to open the season, batting a team-high .421 with three runs scored, a double and an RBI. Senior Anese Thompson is off to a hot start as well, with one home run, two doubles and four RBIs this year. Thompson has also drawn seven walks, generating an on-base percentage of .441. Centerfielder Jess Bianco and freshman Madison Konopka have occupied the top two spots of the lineup in each game this season and are leading the squad with nine hits apiece.
St. John's will begin and end the weekend with contests against Le Moyne. The Dolphins are 0-5 to start the season, falling to Syracuse, UNCW and Queens (N.C.) in the opening weekend. Freshman Isabella Kwashek leads the Le Moyne pitching staff, tallying nine innings with five strikeouts and a 3.89 ERA to start 2025.
The Red Storm and Dolphins' two meetings this weekend will mark the first-ever between the two programs.
The Johnnies will then battle Youngstown State, who enters the tournament with a 0-5 record after going winless at the Wofford Tournament against Dayton, Towson and Wofford. Bree Kohler leads the Penguins' lineup after missing all of 2024 with an injury. The redshirt junior is batting .438 with a pair of doubles and two RBIs.
St. John's controls the all-time series with a 4-1 record against Youngstown State. The two programs last met in the season-opening game of the 2015 season when the Red Storm came out on top with a 4-2 victory.
Brown is first on Saturday's schedule for the Red Storm. The Bears are opening their 2025 season this weekend after finishing last year with an 18-24 record. Second Team All-Ivy selection Laurel Moody returns to Brown's lineup after batting .299 with three homers and 25 RBIs in 2024.
The Johnnies and Bears will meet for the first time since 1992 and for the eighth time in the two program's histories this weekend. St. John's leads the all-time series with a 6-1 record.
Following its contest with Brown, the Red Storm will take on host Winthrop in Saturday's second contest. The Eagles are 6-3 to open the year after going 3-1 last weekend at the Carolina Classic, taking down Appalachian State twice and Georgia State. Senior Megan Powell leads Winthrop's pitching staff with a 4-1 record, 31 punchouts and a 2.52 ERA in 25 innings pitched.
The Red Storm and Eagles will meet for the seventh time in history and the fifth time in Rock Hill, S.C. Winthrop holds a 5-1 advantage in the all-time series, including a 6-5 win in the two teams' last meeting on March 9, 2012.
Following its time in South Carolina, St. John's will continue non-conference play when it travels to Georgia for Kennesaw State's Tournament on Feb. 28-March 1.
