The Red Storm and the Cardinals will meet for the first time since 2016
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's baseball team is set to square off with Louisville this weekend in a three-game series, beginning on Friday from Jim Patterson Stadium in Louisville, Ky., starting at 3 p.m. ET.
Both Saturday and Sunday's contests are slated for a 1 p.m. ET, start. All three games will be streamed on ACC Network Extra on ESPN+, while live stats will be available on RedStormSports.com.
The Red Storm (0-6) will look to rebound after dropping its three-game set against No. 13 Wake Forest last weekend at David F. Couch Ballpark in Winston-Salem, N.C.
First Baseman Jared Beebe had a productive showing in North Carolina, batting .385 with five hits, two RBIs and a run scored. The Barton College transfer registered a hit in all three games last weekend, including two multi-hit performances. In game three on Sunday, the senior smacked a two-RBI double and scored a run of his own.
Jayder Raifstanger will look to extend his on-base streak to seven games on Friday, having reached base safely in every contest so far this season for St. John's. The sophomore posted a pair of hits and walks on the road against the Demon Deacons last weekend. Additionally, Beebe carries a four-game on-base streak into this weekend's series, while Jon LeGrande has reached safely in three consecutive contests.
Freshman Shaun McMillan launched his first career home run on Sunday in the Johnnies' series finale against Wake Forest. The slugger got every bit of a pitch, mashing a two-run shot into right field in the top of the eighth inning.
Sam Mettert and Jacob Ruiz have both yet to give up a run in relief for the Red Storm this season and combined for 3.2 scoreless innings against Wake Forest on Sunday afternoon. Mettert threw a pair of strikeouts and generated a double play across two frames of work.
St. John's and Louisville are set to battle for the 29th time in program history and for the first time since the 2016 season. In their last series from April 29-30, 2016, the Cardinals won all three games in Kentucky. The Red Storm leads the all-time series 15-13, but Louisville holds an 8-4 record against the Johnnies at Jim Patterson Stadium.
The Cardinals will host St. John's with a 6-1 overall record, after taking down Butler, 15-11, in a midweek affair at Jim Patterson Stadium on Wednesday afternoon. The Red Storm will also take on its second ACC opponent in as many weeks, marking the first time the Johnnies have faced two teams from the conference in a single season since 2013.
Infielder Jake Monroe leads the Cardinals with a .464 batting average, 13 hits, including two doubles, a triple and a home run. The junior has also racked up four RBIs, nine runs scored and four walks this season. The former Junior College All-American has registered a hit in all seven games for Louisville so far this year.
Starting pitcher Patrick Forbes has been dominant in his first two appearances of the season. The righty has only given up two runs on seven hits and one walk and is tied for the ACC lead with 20 strikeouts.
Following this weekend's three-game set, the Red Storm will stay on the road to face Big Ten foe Ohio State in a midweek contest from Columbus, Ohio, on March 4. First pitch from Bill Davis Stadium is set for 3 p.m.
