The Johnnies have shut out their opponents in seven matches this season
QUEENS, N.Y. – After two matches in Arizona, the St. John's men's tennis team returned to Queens and shut out Hofstra, 7-0, on Wednesday at the USTA National Tennis Center.
The Johnnies (15-1, 3-0 BIG EAST) rebounded from their first loss of 2025 by blanking their seventh opponent of the season. The Red Storm's 15-1 mark through 16 matches is the best start in program history.
St. John's battled to take the team doubles point on Wednesday against the Pride before sweeping solo play, improving to 6-0 against its local rivals from Nassau County.
Max Amling and Armando Sotelo kicked off partner play with a 6-2 triumph over Maxim Michaels and Noa Forste-Dinell on the No. 1 court before Hofstra evened the score on the No. 2 court.
Adam Groves and Ryota Kaneda clinched the team point for the Johnnies at No. 3 doubles, playing to a 6-2 win against Matthew Garcia and Josh Reynolds. Kaneda and Groves are a perfect 13-0 as a pair this season.
The Red Storm continued its momentum into singles play. Amling's ninth victory of the year, a 7-5, 6-3 decision over Reynolds on the No. 1 court, secured the team's second point, and Carl Gustavsson took down Enaut Garcia, 6-3, 7-6, for the Johnnies' third point of the afternoon.
On the No. 3 singles court, reigning BIG EAST Singles Player of the Week Ignacio Vinas earned a straight-set win over Garcia, 6-3, 6-3, and Leonardo Mileikowsky got the best of Michaels, 6-3, 6-3, on the No. 4 court.
Danilo Raicevic got the Red Storm's sixth point of the match with a 6-1 6-2 takedown of Forste-Dinell and Kaneda put a wrap on the afternoon with his team-leading 11th victory of the season, 6-3, 6-2, on the No. 6 court.
The Johnnies will be back in action on Saturday when they head upstate to battle Cornell at the Reis Tennis Center in Ithaca, N.Y.
