Ana Serafinko Strikes Out 17 as St. John’s Downs Georgetown, 8-2

Serafinko matches her career-high with 17 punchouts inside the circle
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's softball team (18-8-1, 1-0) took down Georgetown, 8-2, to open BIG EAST play on Friday afternoon at Red Storm Field in Queens.
The Johnnies have now won 16 of their last 18 contests and are on a four-game winning streak. Starting pitching Ana Serafinko helped lead the Red Storm to the victory, totaling 17 strikeouts inside the circle to match her career-high.
Serafinko allowed two runs on two hits in the top of the first before sitting down 18 consecutive batters. The left-hander matched her career-high with 17 punchouts, which she set earlier this season against Youngstown State (Feb. 21). Serafinko tallied her seventh win, lowered her ERA to 2.41 and now has 121 strikeouts in 75.2 innings pitched.
Melanie Santos and Natalie Casto drilled back-to-back home runs in the home half of the second to knot the score. Both Santos and Casto have two homers on the season. Casto also recorded a single in the contest to give her 20 hits on the year.
Cassidy Stouffer gave the Red Storm its first lead of the contest with an RBI double in the bottom of the third. The Miami, Fla., native has totaled four doubles and 12 RBIs in 2025.
Jess Bianco and Anese Thompson each tallied RBIs on sacrifice flies, while Elanna Lysiak managed to drive home a pair of runs due to a Hoyas miscue, rounding out the scoring for St. John's.
Georgetown (8-9, 0-4) jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first when Dayanara Campos hit a two-run home run to center field, 2-0. Serafinko battled back by striking out the final two outs before punching out the side in the top of the second to hold the Hoyas' lead at 2-0.
With an out in the bottom of the second, Santos drilled a solo home run to left-center before Casto followed up with a long ball to the same part of the field, knotting the game at 2-2.
Serafinko kept it rolling in the top of the third, striking out the side for the second consecutive innings, bringing her total to eight punchouts through three innings, 2-2.
Stouffer gave the Red Storm its first lead of the ballgame in the bottom of the third by pulling an RBI double into left-center, bringing home Thompson who was hit by a pitch earlier in the frame, 3-2.
In the top of the fourth, Serafinko continued to have her way with the Georgetown lineup by striking out the side for the third straight inning, raising her total to 11 strikeouts in four innings of work, 3-2.
The Johnnies loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the fourth when Santos walked, Casto singled and Madison Konopka bunted for a base hit. Bianco then slapped a fly ball to left field to plate Paige Sterling, who pinch ran earlier in the inning, 4-2. London Jarrard was then hit by a pitch to load the bases ahead of a passed ball, allowing Casto to come across, 5-2.
Inside the circle, Serafinko notched a pair of punchouts in the fifth before striking out the side for the fourth time in the top of the sixth, holding St. John's three-run advantage.
The Red Storm offense tacked on three insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth after loading the bases on a Konopka single, Bianco walk and Jarrard hit by pitch. Thompson drove a long fly ball to the warning track in left field, plating Konopka, 6-2. Lysiak then sent a ground ball down the right-field line and a Georgetown error allowed Bianco and Jarrard to score, 8-2.
In the top of the seventh, Serafinko recorded a groundout before the Hoyas recorded their first baserunner since the opening frame with an Emily Strittmatter walk. Serafinko then secured the win by notching her 16th and 17th punchout to give St. John's an 8-2 victory.
The Red Storm will continue its series against the Hoyas with a doubleheader tomorrow to close out the weekend. The first contest is scheduled for 12 p.m. with the latter game expected to start around 2 p.m.
