The Johnnies are 17-2 this season, the best start in program history
WEST HAVEN, CONN. – The St. John's men's tennis team continued its strong season, picking up a 5-2 win over No. 43 Yale on Saturday in West Haven, Conn.
The Johnnies (17-2, 3-0) took the team point before winning four of six solo contests, earning its first victory over a ranked opponent this season. The Johnnies finish their three-match road trip 2-1 with quality victories over Monmouth and Yale.
Max Amling and Armando Sotelo kicked off partner play with a 6-1 defeat of Jim Ji and Jason Shuler on the No. 1 court. Adam Groves and Ryota Kaneda wrapped up doubles action with their 14th win of the season as a duo, a 6-2 triumph over Edward Liao and Eric Li on the No. 3 court.
In solo action, Amling beat Ji, 6-2, 6-2, on the No. 1 court, and Carl Gustavsson got his eighth singles win of the season, defeating Shuler in three sets on the No. 2 court, 6-1, 3-6, 6-1.
Yale earned victories on the No. 3 and 4 singles courts for its only two points of the afternoon.
On the No. 5 court, Danilo Raicevic defeated Renaud Lefevre, 6-3, 6-3, before Kaneda gritted out a three-set triumph at No. 6 singles, getting the better of Aidan Reilly, 6-2, 0-6, 6-4, to wrap up the ranked victory for the Johnnies.
St. John's will have a week off before returning to action on March 30 against Temple in Queens. First serve from the USTA National Tennis Center is set for 12 p.m.
