STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The St. John's baseball team (11-12) took down Wagner (12-11), 6-3, on Tuesday afternoon at SIUH Community Park in Staten Island, N.Y.
Will Cowan had a great showing in Staten Island, racking up two hits, a double, three RBIs and a stolen base against the Seahawks. Jon LeGrande also tallied two hits with two walks, reaching base in all four of his plate appearances, alongside a run scored.
Jackson Tucker logged a pair of scores on three walks to go along with a stolen base. Jared Beebe posted two runs and an RBI, which came off a sacrifice fly. Shaun McMillan contributed a hit, a run scored and an RBI on Tuesday afternoon.
Evan Hoeckele registered the win, only giving up one run across four innings pitched in his fourth start of the season. Jed Boyle picked up his first save of the year, closing out the game in the ninth inning.
The Red Storm kicked off the top of the first by loading the bases on two walks and a hit-by-pitch with one out. Cowan proceeded to send a line drive into center field, bringing Tucker and Beebe home to give the Johnnies a 2-0 edge.
The Johnnies posted a three-spot top of the second. After LeGrande and Tucker both walked and advanced a base to start the frame, a Beebe sacrifice fly and a two-out McMillan RBI single plated both runners. Cowan finished off the scoring in the second by lacing an RBI double that one-hopped the wall into deep left field, sending McMillan to the plate from first and growing the advantage to five, 5-0.
Following a scoreless third inning, the Seahawks put themselves on the board in the bottom of the fourth. Diego Tavarez tripled into right field and was brought home from a Joesph Mennella base hit that was smacked up the middle, cutting the home team's deficit to four, 5-1.
In the away side of the sixth inning, the Johnnies generated a pair of base runners from a LeGrande single and Tucker's third walk of the game, however, Wagner reliever Zach Gorman was able to flip the frame with a double play.
The Seahawks tacked on two runs in the bottom of the sixth stanza. Mennella started the scoring by sending a home run into right-center before Wagner earned a pair of base runners from a single and a double. A groundout brought another score in, cutting the Johnnies' lead down to two, 5-3.
St. John's added another tally in the top side of the seventh. Beebe opened the frame by working a walk, advancing to third on a wild pitch and a passed ball, and scoring on an error by Wagner's shortstop, increasing the Red Storm's lead back to three, 6-3.
A combination of Dylan Johnson and Boyle shut down the Seahawks, allowing no more runs over the final three frames as the Johnnies took their first of two midweek contests, 6-3.
The Red Storm will return home tomorrow to square off with Central Connecticut State in Queens, N.Y. First pitch from Jack Kaiser Stadium is set for 3 p.m.
