The Red Storm earned its second sweep in BIG EAST play this season and improved to 8-1 in the conference
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's softball team (26-10-1, 8-1) downed Providence, 3-1, to earn the series sweep over the Firars on Sunday afternoon at Red Storm Field.
The Red Storm earned its second sweep of the season in BIG EAST play, taking down the Friars 9-2 on Friday and 2-1 on Saturday. The Johnnies now begin the conference season with an 8-1 record, signifying the program's best start since the 2019 season when it opened with an 11-1 mark in the BIG EAST.
Ana Serafinko earned her 12th win inside the circle in her ninth complete game of the season. The left-hander surrendered just one unearned run on four hits while striking out seven batters. Serafinko lowered her ERA to 1.93 and has punched out 185 batters in 116 innings pitched.
Shortstop London Jarrard recorded a two-RBI single and a walk in the contest. The senior leads the squad with a .420 batting average and 38 RBIs in 2025.
Madison Konopka recorded an RBI double in the win, marking the fourth two-bagger of her freshman season. The third baseman has 12 RBIs on the season.
Providence (11-20, 6-6) entered the run column early in the top of the first on a miscue that allowed Elisa Smith, who led off with a bunt single, to cross the plate and give the Friars a 1-0 lead.
The Red Storm generated a pair of base runners in the bottom of the first, with Jarrard and Anese Thompson drawing a pair of walks. However, Providence's starter Alyssa Twomey tallied the third out to leave the frame unscathed and hold the Friars' one-run advantage.
Serafinko settled back in on the rubber in the top of the second, notching a 1-2-3 inning on a pair of ground outs and a pop-out to keep the score at 1-0.
St. John's cracked the run column in the bottom of the second, scoring three runs. Celia Macari led off the frame with a walk ahead of Melanie Santos drilling a hard single to center field. An out later, Konopka poked an RBI double over the left fielder's head to knot the game at 1-1. With two outs, Jarrard sent a two-RBI single back up the middle to give the Red Storm a 3-1 lead.
Following that point, Serafinko and Twomey exchanged blank frames through five innings of play to keep the game at 3-1 in favor of St. John's.
The Friars threatened in the top of the sixth, recording a pair of two-out singles. Serafinko remained poised in the circle, recording her fifth punchout of the game for the third out to hold the score at 3-1.
Thompson led off the bottom of the sixth by pulling a double down the left-field line to give the Red Storm a runner in scoring position. Alannah Hopkins then entered in relief of Twomey to record three outs and keep St. John's lead at two runs.
Serafinko closed out the game for the Johnnies, sitting the Friars down 1-2-3 to give the Red Storm a 3-1 victory and the series sweep over Providence.
St. John's will be back in action when it heads to Staten Island, N.Y., on Wednesday for a midweek clash with Wagner at 2 p.m.
