Jared Beebe registered two extra base hits and a team-best three RBIs
Jared Beebe had a phenomenal outing on Saturday, going 2-for-4 with a double and triple, along with three RBIs. Shaun McMillan tallied three hits, including his first career triple, scoring two runs himself and batting in another.
David Rodriguez was masterful in his first appearance at Jack Kaiser Stadium, only allowing three runs (one earned) on four hits with three strikeouts. The freshman also earned the first win of his collegiate career, going for six complete innings on Saturday.
Jackson Tucker went 2-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored, two stolen bases, an RBI and a walk against the Highlanders. Jon LeGrande scored three runs on two hits with a pair of stolen bases in the contest.
Jayder Raifstanger extended his on-base streak to 12 games and his hitting streak to six contests, after ringing up two hits, a walk, a score and an RBI.
Following a quiet first inning, the Red Storm threatened in the home half of the second. Will Cowan worked a five-pitch walk, before Luke Orbon reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to third on an error by the Highlander's shortstop. Adam Agresti tapped an infield single, giving the Johnnies two runners on base, but NJIT starter Brandon Peterson shut the inning down with a double play.
The Johnnies put two runners on again in the third frame. Tucker smacked a base hit to shortstop and stole second, before Raifstanger was issued a free pass. Tucker went ahead and stole third, but Peterson generated his second double play in as many innings, getting out with no damage done.
In the top of the fourth, NJIT registered the first run of the game. Ray Ortiz singled and stole second base, before Mason Wolf brought him to the plate, giving the Highlanders a 1-0 edge. However, in the bottom of the frame, St. John's evened things at 1-1. McMillan smacked a single into center field and moved to third base on a wild pitch and a groundout. Agresti then brought him home on a sacrifice fly to right field, knotting the score, 1-1.
The Red Storm jumped in front with a four-run fifth inning. LeGrande walked and snagged second base, ahead of Tucker doubling down the right field line, bringing him to the plate. Tucker went to third on a failed pick-off attempt and then scored on a wild pitch before Beebe walked and was sent home on a McMillan triple. Cowan capped off the inning with a sacrifice fly that plated McMillan, giving the Johnnies a 5-1 advantage.
The Highlanders cut its deficit to two, 5-3, in the away half of the sixth stanza. Ortiz singled and was moved all the way up to third on a St. John's defensive miscue. He then scored on a groundout while another Highlander came home on a sacrifice fly, but Rodriguez was able to engineer the final out and retire the side.
St. John's tacked on another run in the sixth. LeGrande singled into right field and immediately stole second base, in front of a Tucker walk. Raifstanger proceeded to whack a 2-0 pitch right up the middle, scoring LeGrande and pushing the Johnnies' lead to three, 6-3.
In the bottom of the eighth, the Red Storm padded its lead with five insurance runs. The Johnnies loaded the bases after LeGrande doubled, Tucker was plucked and Raifstanger hit an infield single. Beebe came to the plate and smacked a bases-clearing triple down the left field line, which was followed by him scoring on a groundout in the next play. Cowan then singled and advanced to second on a fielding error in the outfield, before Orbon knocked a base hit into center field, bringing Cristian Bernardini home, who pinch-ran for Cowan, growing the lead to 11-3.
Sam Mettert came on in relief in the top of the ninth for the Red Storm and sat down the Highlanders in order, tying the weekend series at one game apiece.
The Red Storm will close out its three-game set with the Highlanders tomorrow afternoon. First pitch from Jack Kaiser Stadium is slated for 1 p.m.
