Bobby Seel and Jayson Cardenas each had two points for the Johnnies
SMITHFIELD, R.I. – The St. John's lacrosse team could not complete the fourth-quarter comeback on Saturday, falling to Bryant, 9-6, on Saturday at Beirne Stadium in Smithfield, R.I.
The Johnnies (2-5) fired 43 shots but struggled to find the back of the net in the low-scoring affair, dropping the first-ever meeting between the two northeast programs.
After missing Tuesday's game against Fairfield, netminder Patrick Scarborough made his return to the lineup and had a strong performance, making 10 saves. Through five games this season, the Owings Mills, Md., product has a 52.9 save percentage.
Offensively, Bobby Seel tallied two assists to run his team-best point streak to 23 games, dating back to 2023. On the season, the senior midfielder is fourth on the team with 14 points on seven goals and seven assists.
Two of Seel's helpers resulted in Jayson Cardenas scores, as the freshman netted his seventh and eighth goals of the season. The eight tallies are good for fourth most on the team.
The Red Storm starting attack of Ryan Ormond, Brian Kelly and Adrian Nowak each tallied a point against the Bulldogs. Kelly and Nowak found the back of the net while Ormond dished a helper. Kelly and Nowak lead the Red Storm with 28 and 24 points, respectively, and Ormond has 16.
Dan Koban and Drew Wasserman each scored their fifth goal of the season to round out the Johnnies' scoring on Saturday.
Freshman Quinn Falasca had another monster day on the defensive end for St. John's, recording three caused turnovers and a season-best six groundballs. Falasca leads the Red Storm with 15 forced giveaways and 27 loose balls. Dylan Lee also caused a turnover, his 12th of 2025.
Scott Einarson had a spectacular day in net for the Bulldogs, making 13 saves on 19 shots on goal. Dawson Rielly scored three times, while Luca Elmaleh found the back of the net twice for the home side.
The Johnnies struck first on their first possession when Cardenas found the back of the net off a feed from Seel. Koban doubled the lead just over two minutes later, taking a pass from Koch in the slot and bouncing one into the twine. The Bulldogs erased the deficit with two straight scores, knotting the game at two after the first quarter.
The teams traded defensive stands for the first half of the second frame, but a Bryant transition score broke the deadlock with 7:42 to go in the opening half. Bryant scored again before Wasserman's snipe from the left side put the 4-0 Bulldogs run to a halt. Kelly sprinted down the lane and bounced one past Einarson late in the frame to send the teams into the locker rooms tied at four.
Bryant scored the first three goals of the second half to take its largest lead of the afternoon, 7-4. Nowak responded on an Ormond feed to get the Red Storm back within two, 7-5 at the end of three.
After a Bulldogs score early in the final frame, Cardenas answered with 11:44 to go, making it 8-6. Despite 12 shots in the final quarter, the Johnnies were held scoreless for the remainder of the quarter before Bryant iced the game with an empty-net goal with 1:01 remaining.
St. John's will have two days off before traveling to Piscataway, N.J., to take on Rutgers on Tuesday. Faceoff from SHI Stadium is set for 3 p.m.
