St. John’s Heads to the UConn Northeast Challenge

The Red Storm will partake in BIG EAST rival UConn’s home meet
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's track & field team will head to Storrs, Conn., to compete in the UConn Northeast Challenge. The Huskies' two-day home meet will kick off on Friday at 12 p.m. with the men's and women's pole vault.
The Johnnies will compete in UConn's annual home meet for the third straight season. Last year, the Red Storm came in 10th place after racking up 30 points. Nora Haugen won the 800-meter dash on a mark of 2:09.36, while Gabriella Caronia and Delicia Bent finished in third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and the 200-meter dash, respectively.
The Red Storm is fresh off an impressive showing at USF's South Florida Invitational in Tampa, Fla. As a team, the Johnnies tallied a win in the 800-meter run with nine top-10 finishes at the USF Track & Field Stadium.
Jamora Alves was named the BIG EAST Women's Field Athlete of the Week after posting a second-place effort in the shot put and a third-place mark in the discus in Florida. In the shot put, the junior rang up a season-best throw of 15.43 meters for a silver medal in the event. Later in the day, the Grenada native provided a season-record launch of 52.07 meters for a bronze medal in the discus. Both throws put Alves on the NCAA Regional lists in the shot put and discus.
Haugen garnered a gold medal in the 800-meter run on Saturday at the South Florida Invitational. The talented junior from Norway beat out her competition with a 2:06.12 finish. Leyre Campo de Quevedo placed fourth, completing the event in a season-best 2:11.46.
In the 5,000-meter run, Campo de Quevedo continued her impressive day at the USF Track & Field Stadium with a fourth-place 17:09.61 finishing time.
Chinenye Onuorah showed out in the 400-meter dash, pacing the race in 54.10 seconds for sixth place.
Following this weekend's meet in Storrs, Conn., the Red Storm will travel to Philadelphia for the historic Penn Relays next weekend. The national meet will begin on Thursday, April 24.
