St. John’s Finishes in Sixth at UConn Northeast Challenge

The Red Storm totaled 50 points as a team
STORRS, Conn. – The St. John's track & field team finished in sixth place at the UConn Northeast Challenge, in Storrs, Conn., on Saturday afternoon.
As a team, the Johnnies racked up 50 total points at the meet, beating out seventh-place Central Connecticut by 11 tallies. The Red Storm earned 15 top-10 finishes at its BIG EAST foe's annual home meet.
The Johnnies' 4x400-meter relay team of Ciara Wiltshire, Ryana Dennis, Maddie Kelso-Heap and Karese Lloyd dazzled with a third-place 3:58.39 finish in the race.
In the triple jump, Fia Viklund continued her strong junior season with a personal-best leap of 12.03 meters for a bronze medal. Rachel Hippolyte ended her day in 11th, notching a jump of 10.91 meters.
Danella Dawkins secured a fourth-place 14.31-second result in her first 100-meter hurdle appearance of the season. Jerese Allwood posted a 16.21-second in the race for 15th.
In the 400-meter dash, Dennis led the pack with a season-best mark of 55.41 seconds for fourth place.
Cassandra Lemus-Sodji tallied a fourth-place effort on a personal-record 11.99-second finishing time in the 100-meter dash. Lloyd registered a time of 12.19 seconds for eighth place, while Ava Spencer finished in 14th on a 12.43-second effort.
In the 400-meter hurdles, Kelso-Heap rang up a fourth-place mark of 1:02.93, while Wiltshire finished in a personal-best 1:05.08 for eighth. Sophia Leslie finished third on the Red Storm and 10th overall with a personal-record 1:06.79 finishing time. Djassi Dean capped off the Johnnies' performance in the event, pacing the race in 1:11.18 for 13th overall.
The Red Storm's 4x100-meter relay squad of Lloyd, Dennis, Spencer and Dawkins notched a fourth-place finish on a mark of 47.01 seconds.
Ruth Smith finished in a three-way tie for fourth place in the high jump. The sophomore posted a personal-record leap of 1.60 meters in the event. Ashley Sadler came in ninth place, also jumping over the 1.60-meter bar.
Desiree Pagan registered a personal-best heave of 49.80 meters to finish in fifth place in the hammer throw.
In the long jump, Linn Hertz showed out with a season-best leap of 5.60 meters for sixth place. Jade Dockery secured a jump of 5.26 meters for a 12th-place effort in the event.
Lemus-Sodji led the Red Storm in the 200-meter dash, posting a 25.13-second finish for 10th overall. Lloyd came in 13th on a personal-best mark of 25.31 seconds, while Spencer ended in 21st with a season-record pace of 26.56 seconds.
In the discus, Maja Henry notched a toss of 40.11 meters for 13th in the event. Pagan finished in 18th on a throw of 37.52 meters.
Berit Friedenbach came in 12th place in the women's pole vault, producing a leap of 3.36 meters.
In the 400-meter run, Ezgi Yasar and Ana Dobsa finished in 14th and 16th, logging marks of 2:21.38 and 2:22.36, respectively.
The Red Storm will hit the road for the historic Penn Relays in Philadelphia next weekend. The meet will kick off on Thursday, April 24.
