CAYCE, S.C. (April 18, 2025) – The top-seeded St. John's men's tennis team opened the 2025 BIG EAST Tournament with a 4-0 sweep over No. 8 Villanova on Friday at the Cayce Tennis and Fitness Center in Cayce, S.C.
With the victory, the Johnnies are a win away from advancing to their sixth consecutive conference championship match. They will face the winner of No. 4 DePaul and No. 5 Georgetown in the semifinals tomorrow at 12:45 p.m.
The Red Storm took the team doubles point before sweeping singles play, picking up its second sweep of the Wildcats in as many weeks.
The Johnnies cruised through doubles play to take an early lead they would never relinquish. Max Amling and Armando Sotelo started things off with a 6-1 triumph on the No. 1 court over Justin Frattarelli and William Monahan. Minutes later, Ryota Kaneda and Adam Groves bested Kush Anand and Thomas Wakefield, 6-2, clinching the team point and giving St. John's a 1-0 lead.
Carrying the momentum into singles play, Amling earned his second win of the afternoon, moving past Cooper Gordon in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1, giving the Red Storm a 2-0 lead.
Kaneda's team-leading 17th singles triumph of the afternoon, a convincing 6-0, 6-2 domination of Anand on the No. 6 court, brought St. John's within one point of taking the match. Carl Gustavsson closed the door on the Wildcats, defeating Michael Fourticq at the second flight, 6-4, 6-0, clinching the 4-0 sweep.
The Johnnies defeated Georgetown, 4-0, back on Feb. 8 and are 13-3 all-time against the Hoyas. DePaul defeated St. John's in last year's championship match.
