The Red Storm earn the series win over the Bluejays with Saturday’s victory
OMAHA, Neb. – The St. John's softball team (34-13-1, 14-4 BIG EAST) edged Creighton, 5-4, to earn the series victory on Saturday afternoon at the Creighton Sports Complex.
The Red Storm and Bluejays split the opening two games of the series yesterday, with the Johnnies winning the opening contest 1-0 in 13 innings before Creighton took the second game 6-4. With the series victory, St. John's has won five of its six BIG EAST series, improving to 14-4 in the conference.
London Jarrard led the offensive attack, going 2-for-4 with a double and a pair of RBIs. By recording an RBI single in the first inning, the senior broke her program record that was set last season with her 52nd RBI of the year. Jarrard leads the St. John's offense, batting .424 with 10 doubles, 12 home runs and 53 RBIs.
Inside the circle, Ana Serafinko secured her team-leading 17th win of the season, allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits while striking out four batters in 6.1 innings pitched. Serafinko also hit in the contest, producing a pair of singles, an RBI and a run scored. The left-hander has racked up 228 strikeouts and holds a 2.50 ERA in 154 innings this year.
Melanie Santos also helped pace the team with a pair of base hits, while Jess Bianco reached base four times, all on walks. Cassidy Stouffer recorded her eighth double of the year and came around to score.
The Red Storm jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first when Bianco led off the contest with a walk and swiped second to put a runner in scoring position. Jarrard then drove her in on an RBI single to right-center field, 1-0.
Serafinko started the contest inside the circle by sitting Creighton (19-22, 9-9 BIG EAST) down 1-2-3 on five pitches in the bottom half of the first.
The Bluejays evened the contest on an Erika Perez RBI single back up the middle, 1-1. With the bases loaded and no outs, Serafinko limited the damage by recording a pair of strikeouts and a foul out to keep the game knotted up after two innings of play.
Inside the circle, Serafinko settled back in during the bottom of the third, tossing a quick 1-2-3 frame while punching out her third batter of the game, 1-1.
Stouffer led off the top of the fourth by lining a double into the right-center gap before Serafinko helped her own cause by lacing an RBI single into center field, giving St. John's a 2-1 lead.
In the top of the fifth, the Red Storm offense found the scoreboard again with Bianco leading off the frame with her third walk ahead of Jarrard pulling an RBI double down the right-field line, providing the Johnnies with a two-run cushion, 3-1.
Creighton got a run back in the home half of the fifth with Ella Dalton coming around to score on a miscue after leading off the inning with a double, 3-2.
St. John's responded right back in the top of the sixth with Serafinko and Santos leading off the inning with a pair of base hits. The runners then advanced to second and third on a sacrifice bunt by Natalie Casto. Sarah Post entered as a pinch hitter, driving a deep sacrifice fly to left field to score Serafinko, and an error allowed Santos to come around as well, giving the Red Storm a 5-2 lead.
Sydney Potter inched the Bluejays closer by hitting a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth, 5-3. Serafinko remained poised inside the circle, recording the next two outs to keep St. John's up two runs.
Creighton attempted to come back, putting two runners on with a Dalton triple and Sydra Seville single with one out. Loreley Francia then entered the circle in relief, and a sacrifice bunt by Ashten Pierson allowed Dalton to come across, 5-4. With the game-tying run now on third, Francia generated a ground ball to short, tallying the third out and sealing the 5-4 victory for the Red Storm.
St. John's will now return home for its final homestand of the year, beginning on Wednesday against Hofstra at 3 p.m.
