Jamora Alves Breaks Grenada Discus National Record at Penn Relays

The junior posted a heave of 54.33 meters to break her own national record in the discus
PHILADELPHIA – The St. John's track & field team enjoyed an impressive group of performances at the historic Penn Relays at Franklin Field in Philadelphia on Friday and Saturday.
As a team, the Johnnies notched five top-10 finishes at the longest-running track and field competition in the United States.
Jamora Alves continued her historic junior campaign, breaking her own Grenada national record in the discus of 52.84 from the 2023 Hurricane Collegiate Invitational. The thrower posted a personal-best heave of 54.33 meters for fifth place in the event and the national record.
The Grenada product continued to shine in the shot put in Philadelphia. Alves put together a toss of 15.03 meters for eighth place.
Naiara Garcia, Leilani Robinson, Maddie Kelso-Heap and Nora Haugen breezed through the college 4x800-meter relay, finishing in third place on a mark of 8:45.04.
In the sprint medley relay, Jalen Jackson, Cassandra Lemus-Sodji, Nyla Henderson and Garcia paced the event in 3:58.10 for seventh place against some of the best programs in the nation during the Championship of America round.
The Johnnies 4x400-meter relay group of Chinenye Onuorah, Ryana Dennis, Robinson and Haugen tallied a 12th-place finish on a 3:39.60 effort in the Championship of America on Friday night.
The Red Storm will return to the track next weekend, when it closes out the regular season, by hosting the Tom Farrell Classic for Senior Day on May 3 at DaSilva Memorial Field in Queens, N.Y.
