No. 1 St. John’s Claims Eighth BIG EAST Championship With 4-0 Sweep Over Creighton

CAYCE, S.C. (April 20, 2025) – The No. 1 St. John's men's tennis team won its second match in as many days, taking down No. 5 Georgetown on Saturday in the BIG EAST Semifinals in Cayce, S.C.
After winning three singles matches and one doubles contest over the past three days of the BIG EAST Tournament, Carl Gustavsson was named the tournament's Most Outstanding Player.
The victory marked the Red Storm's eighth all-time BIG EAST title, the most in the league's history. It was also the program's sixth championship in the last 11 seasons and first since 2023.
Head Coach Dillon Pottish claims his third championship at the helm of the St. John's men's tennis program and caps off the winningest season in program history with a trophy.
The Johnnies cruised through doubles competition to take the team point before sweeping singles play, picking up the team's 10th win in a row.
Max Amling and Armando Sotelo kicked off partner play by taking down Ethan Neil and Rockey McKenzie, 6-2 on the No. 1 court, before Carl Gustavsson and Danilo Raicevic defeated Yuma Daijima and Alejandro Gandini, 6-3, at the second singles position to clinch the team point.
Up 1-0 heading into singles play, Kaneda continued his momentum with a straight-set takedown of Neil on the No. 6 court, giving St. John's a 2-0 advantage. Three minutes later, Ignacio Vinas completed his shutout of Kirtan Patel at the third singles flight, 6-3, 6-1, bringing the Red Storm to the brink of victory.
On the No. 4 court, Leonardo Mileikowsky took the first set against Zachary Kou, 6-2, and closed out the Johnnies' championship in the second set, 6-3.
The Red Storm will now await its placement in the 2025 NCAA Tournament. The tournament's selection show will be held on April 28 on NCAA.com, where 16 teams will be chosen to host a quad of teams, making up the 64-team field.
