The Johnnies are 19-2 this season, the best start in program history
PHILADELPHIA – The St. John's men's tennis team picked up a 4-2 victory over Drexel on Saturday in Philadelphia.
The Johnnies (19-2, 3-0 BIG EAST) took the team doubles before winning three singles contests to extend the program's best-ever start to a season.
The Red Storm's fourth-straight victory began with a 6-2 victory on the No. 1 doubles court by Max Amling and Armando Sotelo, defeating Alex De Sousa and Roman Lafond. After Drexel picked up a win on the No. 3 court, Carl Gustavsson and Danilo Raicevic earned a 6-4 triumph over Will Burridge and Hussein El Tawil at No. 2 doubles to clinch the team point for St. John's.
Up 1-0 heading into singles play, Gustavsson got his second victory of the afternoon on the No. 2 singles court, defeating El Tawil, 7-6, 6-2, and Ignacio Vinas got the best of Burridge in three sets at No. 3 singles, 6-7, 7-5, 7-5.
Drexel earned its two points on the No. 1 and No. 4 court, but Raicevic squeaked out a three-set thriller over Lafond, 6-1, 6-7, 6-4, to clinch the match for St. John's.
St. John's improves to 7-0 all-time against the Dragons with Saturday's victory
With just three matches remaining before the BIG EAST Tournament on April 18, the Johnnies will return to action on Wednesday to host Villanova on Wednesday, April 9, at 3:30 p.m. at the St. John's Outdoor Courts.
