St. John’s Takes Home The Outdoor Metropolitan Championship Title

The Red Storm racked up 179 total points at the annual local championship
NEW YORK, N.Y. – The St. John's track & field team won the annual Outdoor Metropolitan Championships on Friday afternoon at Icahn Stadium on Randall's Island.
As a team, the Johnnies racked up 179 total points, beating out second-place Fordham by a whopping 30.5 points. The championship marks the program's first since it went back-to-back across the 2018-19 outdoor seasons.
The Red Storm took home eight wins and 21 top-five finishes across 12 events at the annual local championship.
At the conclusion of the event, Chinenye Onuorah was named the Simon Hodnett Outstanding Performer Award recipient. The award is dedicated to the late Simon Hodnett, the long-time head coach of LIU, for his legacy of hard work and dedication to track & field.
Leyre Campo de Quevedo picked up her second win of the outdoor season, this time coming in the 10,000-meter run. The freshman paced the event in 36:50.83 for first place.
The Red Storm took three of the top five spots in the 400-meter dash. Leilani Robinson led the way with a personal-best mark of 56.44 seconds for first while Nyla Henderson followed behind her with a season-record 56.82-second finish for third. Jalen Jackson rounded out the Johnnies' effort in the event with a fifth-place time of 57.98 seconds.
The program dominated in the 100-meter dash, as Cassandra Lemus-Sodji took home first place on a mark of 12.26 seconds. Ava Mabry-Spencer placed fifth on a time of 12.52 seconds, while Onuorah and Karase Lloyd rounded out the Johnnies' day in the event, finishing back-to-back in sixth and seventh on 12.54 and 12.58-second finishes, respectively.
Maddie Kelso-Heap took home a gold medal in the 800-meter run, pacing the race in 2:12.86. Ana Dobsa finished in 10th on a mark of 2:24.51.
In the 400-meter hurdles, Djassi Dean picked up the first win of her Red Storm tenure, posting a personal-best 1:03.28 effort. Ciara Wiltshire rang up a fourth-place mark of 1:07.11, finishing before Sophia Leslie, who rang up a time of 1:09.35 for ninth.
The Red Storm took all three of the top spots in the 200-meter dash, as Onuorah notched a gold medal with a personal-record 23.92-second time. Jackson took second, breezing through the event in a career-best 24.45 seconds, while Nora Haugen posted a time of 24.80 seconds for third.
In the 4x400-meter relay, the group of Lloyd, Nyla Henderson, Robinson and Haugen blew out their competition, finishing the race in 3:46.05.
Desiree Pagan won the hammer throw, recording a personal-record heave of 48.57 meters for first place. Juliet Smith secured sixth place from a career-best toss of 44.32 meters.
Jamora Alves followed up the Red Storm's superb effort in the hammer throw, by winning the discus with a toss of 42.36 meters. Maja Henery went home with a silver medal in the competition, logging a throw of 39.62 meters.
Naiara Garcia continued the impressive showing for the Red Storm's distance squad, coming in second place in the 1,500-meter run off a season-best finishing time of 4:41.82. Ezgi Yasar finished in 16th place, posting a mark of 4:56.50.
In the pole vault, Berit Friedenbach led the Johnnies with a mark of 3.50 meters for second place. Virginia Lloret and Colette Metcalf tied for fourth on a vault of 3.35 meters.
The Johnnies 4x800-meter relay squad of Mia Torres, Garcia, Yasar and Dobsa earned the team three points, placing third with a mark of 10:13.55.
Ashley Sadler paced the Red Storm in the high jump, placing fourth off a leap of 1.60 meters. Ruth Smith finished her performance in the event in sixth, producing a jump of 1.55 meters.
Brenin Mahon secured a ninth-place result off a 19:41.86 finishing time in the 5,000-meter run.
The Red Storm will be back in action tomorrow at Princeton's Sam Howell Invitational in Princeton, N.J.
