Ana Serafinko set the single-season program record with her 268th strikeout of the year
STORRS, Conn. – The St. John's softball team (37-15-1, 17-5 BIG EAST) dropped the opening game of its series to UConn, 3-0, on Friday night at Burrill Family Field.
With tonight's loss, the Red Storm will have to win the final two games of the series in order to clinch the BIG EAST Regular Season Title and the No. 1 seed in the BIG EAST Championships. UConn (32-15, 18-4 BIG EAST) can clinch both with a win tomorrow.
Ana Serafinko drew the start, tossing six innings and allowing just three runs (two earned) on five hits while punching out eight batters. The junior set the St. John's single-season program record for strikeouts by tallying her 268th punchout of the season in the bottom of the sixth. Serafinko also notched a single in the top of the first for the Johnnies.
Melanie Santos, Elanna Lysiak and Anese Thompson all tallied a base hit on Friday night as well.
The Red Storm opened the contest with an early scoring opportunity, putting two on with a London Jarrard walk and a Serafinko base hit. However, UConn's starter Payton Kinney recorded the third out to keep the Johnnies off the scoreboard, 0-0.
Inside the circle, Serafinko kicked off the contest with a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the first, striking out a pair before generating a pop-up to keep the game scoreless after an inning of play.
Serafinko and Kinney then continued to engage in a pitcher's duel, exchanging blank frames to keep the contest even at 0-0 through three innings of play.
The Huskies cracked the run column in the bottom of the fourth, plating a pair of runs when Lexi Hastings came around to score on a miscue and a Cat Petteys RBI single, 2-0.
In the bottom of the fifth, Serafinko settled back in on the rubber, tossing a clean frame while striking out her seventh batter of the contest, 2-0.
Lysiak attempted to spark the St. John's offense in the top of the sixth, lining a single down the left-field line with two outs, but Kinney recorded the final out to leave the inning unscathed and maintain UConn's two-run edge.
Kaiea Higa tacked on another run for the Huskies by driving an RBI triple to right-center, 3-0. Serafinko closed out the bottom of the sixth with her eighth punchout of the game and 268th of the year, which set the new St. John's single-season strikeout record.
Thompson led off the top of the seventh by drilling a single into left field, but the Red Storm offense was unable to produce anything else as UConn sealed the 3-0 victory.
St. John's and UConn will continue the series tomorrow with a 2 p.m. first pitch at Burrill Family Field in Storrs, Conn.
