Red Storm outshot the Hoyas, 7-2, in the second half
WASHINGTON – The St. John's men's soccer team suffered its first setback of BIG EAST play on Saturday night, falling to Georgetown, 2-0, at Shaw Field.
Both of the Hoyas' goals came in the opening period of play, a stanza in which Georgetown (6-2-2, 2-0-0 BIG EAST) outshot St. John's by an 8-0 margin. The second half featured significantly more pressure from St. John's (4-3-3, 0-1-1 BIG EAST), as Red Storm owned a 7-2 shot advantage over the final 45 minutes.
In his third season with the Red Storm, senior goalkeeper Alec McLachlan matched St. John's career-high with six saves, five of which came in the opening half.
Gabin Thomelier and Luca Fargnoli led the Red Storm offensively with two shots apiece in the nation's capital
Jorian Michelis made his collegiate debut on Saturday, earning a spot in the starting XI and logging 28 minutes.
The Hoyas' first tally of the game came on a St. John's own goal, as a failed attempt to clear a ball in the box put the Hoyas ahead 1-0 in the 28th minute.
Just over seven minutes later, the Hoyas struck again. Following a Matthew Helfrich throw-in down the right side of the box, Jack Heaps played a cross into the box for Zach Zengue. The senior stopped the ball with his right foot before turning and firing with his left, deflecting his shot off the foot of a defender and into the back of the net.
The win extended the Hoyas' unbeaten streak to eight following an 0-2 start to the campaign.
St. John's will return to action on Friday, Oct. 3, when it travels to Akron for a 7 p.m. contest against the Zips.
