Erin Jones named to OUTRIGGER Invitational All-Tournament Team
HONOLULU, Hawaii (Sept. 8, 2025)- The St. John's volleyball program closed out the OUTRIGGER Invitational with a 3-0 loss to hosts Hawaii late Sunday night. Erin Jones was named to the All-Tournament Team for her efforts over the three matches.
The Albuquerque, N.M., native finished the invitational with 39 kills, nine assists and 32 digs across 11 sets of work. The scores of the sets were 25-20, 25-9 and 25-13.
The Red Storm (0-6, 0-0 BIG EAST) struggled to find their rhythm on offense against the Rainbow Warriors (2-4, 0-0 Big West), registering a season-low nine points in set two.
Six different Johnnies recorded kills, but none had more than Jones with eight. Martina Capponcelli paced the team with 11 assists and Rashanny Solano Smith led the defense with eight digs.
St. John's started the first set with a kill from Jones to open the scoring for the match. The Red Storm would use the kill to fuel a 5-2 run. The two sides would trade points, despite the several attacking and service errors from both teams. Following a Ludovica Zola block, Kendall White fired a ball down for a kill allowing the visitors lead to grow to 13-8, forcing Hawaii to take a timeout. As the back-and-forth would resume, St. John's would hold onto a four-point lead at 15-11. The Rainbow Warriors would erase the deficit with a 4-0 run. Both squads would exchange points until a home team service ace and kill would put them up by a pair, forcing the Johnnies to take a timeout at 20-18. After the timeout, Hawaii would rattle off three points giving them a five-point advantage. In the end, Hawaii would take the first set 25-20.
To open the second frame, Barbara Costa dos Santos helped put the visitors up by a pair before both teams would settle into their offense. Holding a one-point advantage, the home team would use a 6-0 run to force St. John's to take a timeout. Out of the stoppage, the run would continue for the Rainbow Warriors going up by as many as 10 at 18-8. The visitors would score only once more in the set, as Hawaii took the second set 25-9.
The third stanza would begin much like the previous two with the Red Storm jumping out to a two-point advantage before the home team would register a point. After going back-and-forth, the home team would rattle off a three-point run fueled by back-to-back service aces and take the lead at 7-6. The Rainbow Warriors would use a 5-2 run to force the visitors to take a timeout at 12-8. At 15-9, Jones would fire a kill and Kya Harris would send a ball back to Hawaii's end to bring the visitors within four. The home team would respond with another run of 10-2 that was enough to end the match, 25-13.
Jones was one of seven players to be named to the All-Tournament team. She averaged 3.54 kills per set and 2.90 digs per set.
The Red Storm will travel back to Queens and prepare for the 2025 Jack Kaiser Volleyball Classic, which begins on Friday, Sept. 12 against Marist. First serve in Carnesecca Arena is set for 12 p.m. ET.
