Gomez named BIG EAST Singles Player of the Week
NEW YORK – On Monday, Alicia Gomez was named BIG EAST Singles Player of the Week and, alongside Abi Redman, earned BIG EAST Doubles Team of the Week honors, as announced by the conference.
Gomez went 4-0 overall during opening week of the 2026 spring campaign, including a pair of victories alongside Redman against FGCU and Miami Ohio.
The honor marks the third weekly award of Gomez's career and her first of the season. For Redman, it represents the first conference weekly award of her career, cementing a strong start to her Red Storm tenure.
In Fort Myers, the Johnnies split their two matches, dropping a closely contested 4–3 decision to Florida Gulf Coast before bouncing back with a 6–1 victory over Miami Ohio on Sunday, earning their first win of the season.
On Friday against FGCU, the duo opened their 2026 campaign with a hard-fought 7–5 victory over the Eagles' Ashley Matz and Sabrina Jaramillo on the No. 3 court. Gomez then carried the momentum into singles play, cruising past Cecili Johannessen Maeland, 6–1, 6–3, to secure a point for St. John's.
On Sunday, the pair built on their success against Miami Ohio, defeating the RedHawks' duo of Avery Voss and Maria Komar, 6–1, to claim the doubles point. Gomez followed with a singles victory, overcoming Lovisa Valentinsson in a three-set battle, 1–6, 6–2, 6–2, to improve her overall record to 4–0 and 2-0 paired with Redman on the season.
The Johnnies will return to action on Jan. 30, hosting Fairfield at the USTA National Tennis Center. First serve is set for 12:15 p.m.
