St. John’s Dominates Doubleheader with Sweeps of FDU and Siena

Red Storm rolls to 3–0 start in the 2026 campaign
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's men's tennis team were unstoppable, winning both matches today without conceding a set.
In the opening match of Friday's doubleheader, St. John's recorded a 4–0 sweep of FDU.
Adam Groves and Semen Agynskyy opened the match with a dominant 6–0 victory over Gryffin Minor and Benjamin Wrann on the no. 2 court. On the no. 1 court, Armando Sotelo and David Petrovic followed with a 6–1 win against Tyler Crook and Joshua Oboniye to secure the doubles point for the Red Storm.
After securing the doubles point, Taichi Wakamatsu opened singles play with a 6–4, 6–1 victory over Jorge Alonso-Cortes on the no. 5 court, earning his first win in a St. John's uniform. Holding a 2–0 lead, the Red Storm maintained their momentum as Radomir Tomic defeated Gryffin Minor, 6–3, 6–3, to extend the advantage to 3–0.
St. John's clinched the match on the no. 3 court, where Armando Sotelo took a 6–3, 6–4 win over Tauras Mickus.
With the victory, the Johnnies secured their 11th consecutive win over the Knights dating back to 2004 and improved to 2–0 on the season.
In the second leg of the doubleheader, the Red Storm capped a perfect day with another dominant performance, sweeping Siena, 6–0.
With no doubles point contested, the Johnnies opened singles play on the no. 1 court, where Semen Agynskyy delivered a commanding 6–0, 6–2 victory over Mateja Stefanovic to give St. John's a 1–0 lead. Filip Paroulek extended the advantage on the no. 6 court, defeating Emilo Zavala Salinas, 6–2, 6–4.
Holding a 2–0 edge, the Red Storm kept the momentum rolling on the no. 5 court as Taichi Wakamatsu remained perfect on the day, earning a 7–6, 6–3 win over Bruno Loch Varela. St. John's clinched the match on the no. 4 court, where Venedikt Tsirikidze topped Mars Argun, 7–6, 6–1.
Adam Groves and Danilo Raicevic added wins in their respective matches to round out the 6–0 sweep of Siena. With the victory, the Red Storm secured their fourth straight win over the Saints dating back to 2018.
Following the doubleheader, Dillon Pottish's squad will return to action on Feb. 4, traveling to the USTA National Tennis Center to face Drexel. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m.
