Abies Posts Double-Double in 62-57 Road Victory Over Providence

The Red Storm tally 51st all-time victory over the Friars
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – A third-quarter St. John's surge powered the Red Storm past Providence, 62-57, on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Hall.
St. John's (17-7, 7-6 BIG EAST) shot 41.2% from the field and 84.2% at the line in the road victory. The Johnnies dominated the glass, 38-26 and limited the Friars to just 11.1% shooting from three-point range.
Daniela Abies led the Red Storm with her second double-double of the season, 12th of her career, posting a season-high 16 points to go along with 11 rebounds.
Brooke Moore chipped in 10 points, while Janeya Grant added 11 to give St. John's three players in double figures. Jailah Donald dished out a season-high five assists. For Providence (10-13, 3-9 BIG EAST), Sabou Gueye paced the Friars with 18 points, six rebounds, and two steals.
Both teams struggled to find their offensive rhythm early before Providence opened the game on a 4-0 run through the first two minutes. St. John's answered with four straight points from Sa'Mya Wyatt. The Friars briefly pushed ahead by four, but Abies battled back, posting six points to give the Red Storm a 10-8 lead with under four minutes remaining. Providence responded to regain the advantage, 14-12, before St. John's closed the quarter on an eight-point surge in the final minute to take a 20-14 lead. Gueye kept the Friars within striking distance, scoring five unanswered points in the final 23 seconds to cut the deficit to one heading into the second quarter.
St. John's opened the second quarter with a six-point burst to stretch its lead to 26-19. Providence answered by trimming the margin to two midway through the period, then surged ahead on a 7-0 run fueled by back-to-back 3-pointers. The Red Storm responded in the closing 90 seconds, as Abies and Beautiful Waheed combined for four points before Grant drilled a 3-pointer, seconds before the buzzer, to send St. John's into halftime with a 36-32 advantage.

Providence refused to fade quietly, mounting a late comeback that trimmed the 18-point deficit to just five in the closing seconds. Orlagh Gormley and Gueye powered the Friars' push, but the Johnnies held on for a 62-57 victory.
The Red Storm will return home to host Xavier for Everyone Watches Women's Sports and Pride Night at 7 p.m. in Queens.
