The Red Storm records third straight shutout in BIG EAST play

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The St. John's women's soccer team battled Butler to a scoreless draw on Wednesday night at the Bud and Jackie Sellick Bowl.

The Red Storm (3-5-4, 0-1-3 BIG EAST) earned its third consecutive conference point, extending its shutout streak to 270 minutes following scoreless draws against UConn and Creighton. The Johnnies registered 11 shots, including three on target, while Butler (6-2-4, 1-0-3 BIG EAST) finished with 12 attempts and held a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Janelle Sylvestre led the St. John's attack with a match-high four shots, including two on goal. The midfielder has emerged as one of the Red Storm's most active offensive threats in conference play, recording six shots and four attempts on target across four BIG EAST contests. Telma Steindórsdóttir added two shots, one on frame, while five other Johnnies registered an attempt in the contest.

Kayla Bower continued her strong campaign in goal, making three saves to secure her third consecutive clean sheet and sixth of the season. The Lincoln Park, N.J., native has now registered 42 saves through 12 matches while posting a .824 save percentage and a 0.76 goals-against average. Bower has surpassed her previous single-season career high of four shutouts, set in 2025, and has accumulated 163 saves and 10 solo clean sheets across 42 career appearances for the Red Storm.

Julianna Bivona continued to anchor the St. John's backline, playing all 90 minutes for the 12th consecutive contest. The defender remains the only Johnnie to play every minute this season, logging 1,080 minutes across 12 starts. Julia Lombardo, Juliana Dane and Abby Fitzmaurice also played the full 90 minutes against the Bulldogs, helping the Red Storm secure its sixth shutout of the year.

St. John's came out aggressively, generating two early opportunities in the opening nine minutes. Sylvestre tested Butler goalkeeper in the third minute before Steindórsdóttir put another attempt on frame in the ninth. The Bulldogs responded with chances of their own, but Bower made a key stop in the 23rd minute to keep the contest scoreless. The Johnnies continued to push forward, registering three more attempts over the final seven minutes of the half as the two sides entered the break deadlocked.

The Red Storm continued to battle after halftime, with Bower making back-to-back saves in the 60th and 61st minutes to keep Butler off the scoreboard. St. John's picked up its offensive pressure down the stretch, generating five shots over an eight-minute span. Dane and Sia Bharadwaj each had attempts blocked before Daisy Burt sent a shot just wide. Bivona appeared to break through in the 84th minute, but her goal was called back for offside. In the final minute, Lauren Spence made a crucial defensive play, clearing a Butler shot off the goal line to preserve the Red Storm's third consecutive shutout and secure the scoreless draw.

The Red Storm will continue on the road, headed to Georgetown on Oct. 10 for a 7 p.m. kickoff at Shaw Field.
