St. John’s Falls to DePaul on the Road, 72-68

Beautiful Waheed scored a career-high 20 points on Tuesday
CHICAGO – The St. John's women's basketball (19-8, 9-7 BIG EAST) team fell in a close contest on the road to DePaul (6-20, 3-12 BIG EAST), 72-68, at Wintrust Arena.
After the Red Storm trailed by 13 at halftime, it charged back to tie the game in the final quarter, but the comeback ultimately fell short at Wintrust Arena.
Beautiful Waheed went for a career-high 20 points in the Windy City, the first 20-point performance at the Division I level. The junior added five boards and two blocks.
Brooke Moore was efficient, finishing with 17 points on 7-of-9 (77.8%) shooting and making both her attempts from beyond the arc. Sa'Mya Wyatt added 16 points for her third-straight double-digit scoring effort and pulled down six rebounds. The trio combined for 53 of the Red Storm's 68 points. St. John's logged assists on 20 of its 27 made field goals.
Jailah Donald tallied five assists and Daniela Abies grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.
DePaul's Kate Novik had a double-double, scoring 20 points and grabbing 11 rebounds to lead the Blue Demons to victory.
St. John's struck first with a Waheed triple just 35 seconds into the game. The Red Storm briefly held a 5-2 advantage before DePaul answered with a 7-0 run to take control. St. John's regained the lead at 12-11 with 4:09 remaining, but the Blue Demons continued to apply pressure and closed the quarter on top, 19-15.
DePaul opened the second quarter with another triple to extend its lead to seven. The teams traded baskets over the next five minutes, as Kylie Lavelle, Wyatt, and Waheed helped trim the deficit to 24-21. Over the final five minutes of the second frame, the Blue Demons expanded their lead to carry their largest lead of the game, 39-26, into the halftime break.
The Red Storm with a 12-0 run bookended by triples from Donald and Moore that trimmed the deficit to just one, 39-38, to start the second half. DePaul's Ally Timm answered with a triple, but Moore countered with five quick points, including a three of her own, to give the Johnnies their first lead since the 4:09 mark of the first quarter, 43-42. The Blue Demons regained momentum and built a five-point edge with two minutes left in the period, St. John's battled back again to close the quarter within one, 50-49.
In the fourth quarter, the two sides battled as the Red Storm tied the scoreline and cut the lead to one on four separate occasions. In the final minutes, DePaul responded down the stretch to pull out the victory at home.
The Red Storm continue on the road, traveling to Indianapolis to face Butler for a Valentine's Day showdown at 2 p.m.
